Early Education in Calamba and Biñan

Jose Goes to Biñan / First Day in Biñan School


 June 1869,Jose left Calamba for Biñan accompanied by Paciano
 They proceeded to their Aunt’s house where Jose was to lodge
 At the same night Jose and his cousin named Leandro, went sightseeing in the town
 The next morning, Paciano brought Rizal to the School of Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz
 The school was in the house of the teacher
 Pedro, the teacher’s son laughed at Rizal because of his answer

First School Brawl


 Rizal on the first day met the bully Pedro.
 Rizal was angry at this bully for making fun of him in the morning.
 Jose challenge him to a fight, they wrestled and Rizal won because of his Tio Manuel where he
learned the art of wrestling.
 In the afternoon, a classmate named Andres Salandanan challenge him to an arm-wrestling
match .
 Jose lost having the weaker arm, but he never runaway from a fight.

Painting lessons
 Jose and his classmates, Jose Guevarra became apprentices of the old painter called Juancho

Daily Life in Biñan


 Jose led a Spartan life in simplicity in Biñan.

Best Student in School


 In academic, Jose beats all the Biñan boys.
 He surpassed them all in Spanish, Latin and other subjects.

End of Biñan Schooling


 Before Christmas of 1870, Jose received a letter from his sister, informing him the arrival of the
steamer Talim which would take him back to Calamba.
 He left Biñan after one year and a half of schooling in the town.

Martyrdom of Gom-Bur-Za
 The martyrdom of Gomburza in 1872 truly inspired Rizal to fight the evils of Spanish Tyranny
 Rizal dedicated his second novel El Filibusterismo to them.

Injustice to Hero’s Mother


 June of 1872, Rizal’s mother was suddenly arrested on a malicious charge that she and her
brother, Jose Alberto tried to poison the latter’s perfidious wife.
 Doña Teodeora was forced to walk from Calamba to Santa Cruz, a distance of 50 kilometers.
 She was imprisoned for 2 years and a half until the Supreme Court acquitted her of the alleged
crime.
Scholastic Triumphs at Ateneo de Manila
INTRODUCTION
 4 months after the GOMBURZA martyrdom
 Rizals mother Donya Teodora was still in prison during this period
 Jose had not yet celebrated his eleventh birthday was sent to Manila

Ateneo Municipal
 Formerly, Escuela Pia
 A charity school for poor boys
 Supervised by Spanish Jesuits
 Bitter rival of College of San Juan de Letran
 Now known as Ateneo de Manila

 Accompanied by Paciano went to Manila
 Took entrance exam at San Juan de Letran, and passed them
 Returned to Calamba to attend the town fiesta
 His father decided to send him to Ateneo instead

Rizal Enters Ateneo


 Fr. Magin Ferrando, the college registrar refused to admit Jose for two reasons:
 He was late for registration
 He was sickly and undersized for his age
 They seek the help of Manuel Xerez Burgos (nephew of Father Burgos of GOMBURZA) and
eventually Rizal was admitted to study at Ateneo
 Jose was the first of his family to adopt the surname “Rizal”
 He first boarded in a house outside Intramuros
 Boarding house owned by Titay who owed Rizal family P300
 Jose boarded with her in order to collect part of debt

Jesuit System of Education


 More advanced than the other colleges
 Train students by rigid discipline and religious instruction
 Classes in every subject are opened and closed in prayers
 It promoted physical culture, humanities, and scientific studies
 Academic courses, leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts
 Other vocational courses are agriculture, commerce, mechanics, and surveying.
 Students are divided into 2 groups:
 Roman Empire consisting internos (boarders)
 Carthaginian Empire composed of externos (non- boarders)
 Students’ ranks
o Emperor- best student
o Tribune- 2nd best
o Decurion- 3rd best
o Centurion- 4th best
o Standard- bearer- 5th best
Uniform
 Consisted of:
 Hemp- fabric trousers
 Striped cotton coat
 Rayadillo- coat material
 Adopted as uniform for Filipino troops

Rizal’s first year in Ateneo (1872-73)


 First heard mass at the college chapel
 Fr. Jose Bech was his first professor
 He was a newcomer and knows a little Spanish
 He was an externo, hence was assigned as Carthaginians, occupying the end line
 After a month, he became “emperor”
 He took private lessons for Spanish in Sta. Isabel College during noon
 He paid three pesos
 Rizal did not try hard enough to retain his academic supremacy in the second half of his first
year
 He resented some remarks of his professor
 He place 2nd at the end of the year, although his grades were remarked ”excellent”

Summer Vacation (1873)


 Rizal returned to Calamba for vacation
 Saturnina brought him to Tanawan with her
 He visited his mom at Sta. Cruz
 After vacation, he went back to Manila
 He then boarded inside Intramuros
 His landlady was Doña Pepay

Second Year in Ateneo (1873-74)


 He repented having neglected his studies the previous year
 He once more became “emperor”
 Three of his new classmates were his classmates from Maestro Justiniano
 At the end of year, he received excellent grades and gold medal

Prophecy of mother’s release


 Rizal lost no time in visiting his mom in jail
 He cheered her up with news of his scholastic triumphs in Ateneo
 He interpreted Doña Teodora’s dream
 Barely three months, Doña Teodora was released
 Rizal’s prophecy came true

Teenage interest in reading


 He is interested in love stories and romantic tales
 Rizal’s first favorite novel
 The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas
 The reading habit helped him enriched his mind
 He persuaded his father to buy Cesar Cantu’s Universal History
 Great aid in his studies
 Enabled him to win more prizes in Ateneo

 A German scientist-traveler who visited the Philippines in 1859-1860
 Rizal was impressed in this book were:
1. Jagor’s keen observation of the defects of Spanish colonization
2. Someday Spain would lose Philippines and America would come to succeed her

Third Year in Ateneo (1874- 75)


 His grades remained excellent in all subjects
 But he won only one medal – in Latin
 He failed to win the medal in Spanish because his spoken Spanish was not fluently sonorous

Fourth Year in Ateneo(1875- 76)


 He became an interno
 Inspired by Fr. Francisco de Paula sanchez
 Considered as ‘best professor’
 Desrcribed as model of uprightness, earnestness, and love for the advancements of
pupils
 He inspired Rizal to study harder and to write poetry
 Won 5 medals at the end of term

Last year in Ateneo (1876- 77)


 He excelled in all subjects
 Rizal finished his last year at Ateneo in a blaze of glory
 Obtained the highest grades– “excellent”
 The most brilliant Atenean of his time
 He was truly “the pride of the Jesuits”

 Graduated on March 23, 1877 at the age of 16
 With the degree of Bachelor of Arts , with highest honors

 One of Rizal’s contemporaries in Ateneo was Felix M. Roxas
 related that Rizal was hit in the face by one of the thrown books

 Doña Teodora first discovered his poetic skills
 It was Fr. Sanchez who inspired him most
 First poem in Ateneo at 14 was Mi Primera Inspiracion which was dedicated to his mother on
her birthday

Pag-aaral ng Medisina sa Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas (1877-1882)

Abril 1877 (labing anim na taon si Jose)


 Pumasok si Rizal sa Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas para sa kursong Pilosopiya at Sulat.
– Ito ang gusto ng kanyang ama
– Hindi siya sigurado sa karerang gusto niya
 Sumulat siya kay Padre Pablo Ramon (Rektor ng Ateneo) upang humingi ng payo.
 1877-1888, habang nag-aaral sa Santo Tomas ay kumuha din siya ng kursong bokasyonal sa
Ateneo na nagbigay siya ng titulong perito agrimensor (dalubhasang agrimensor)
 Sa edad na 17 naipasa niya ang pag-susulit sa kursong pag-sasarbey (Nob. 25, 1881 ng makuha
niya ang titulo)
 Naging pangulo siya ng Akademya ng mga Likas ng Literaturang Espanyol at kalihim ng
Akademya ng mga Likas na Agham

Mga Pag-ibig ni Rizal ng siya ay nag-aaral sa Santo Tomas


 “Binibining L” - dalagang taga-Calamba. (maganda at may kahali-halinang mata”
– Mahal pa rin niya si Segunda
– Hindi gusto ng kanyang ama si binibining L.
 Noong ikalawang taon sa Unibersidad niligawan naman niya si Leonor Valenzuela na mula sa
Laguna.
 Nangungupahan si Jose noon kay Donya Concha Leyba sa Intramuros na kapitbahay naman nina
Kapitan Juan at Kapitana Sanday Valenzuela (magulang ni Leonor)
 Pinadadalhan niya ito ng liham ng pag-ibig na nakasulat sa tintang di-nakikita.
 Ngunit kinalaunan ay tinigilan na din niya ang panliligaw sa dalaga dahil may isa pa siyang
babaeng napupusuan.

Leonor Rivera
 Si Leonor ay pinsan ni Jose na taga-Camiling.
 Noong simula ng ikatlong taon ni Jose sa Santo Tomas ay tumira naman siya sa Blg.6 Kalye Santo
Tomas, Intramuros. (Antonio Rivera-may ari)
 “Maganda, mayumi gaya ng namumukadkad na bulaklak, na may mabubuting mata”.
 Nabuo ang kanilang pag-ibigan at nagin magkasintahan.
 “Taimis” ang nilalagdang ngalan ni Leonor upang hindi sila mahuli.

 Isinumbong niya ito kay Gob.Heneral Primo de Rivera.

 A La Juventud Filipina Para sa Kabataang Pilipino (1879) – nagwagi sa paligsahan ng Liceo
Artistico-Literario ng Maynila. (samahan ng mahihilig sa sining at panitikan)
– Isang pilak na panulat, hugis pak-pak at may dekorasyong gintong laso
 Ang Konseho ng mga Diyos (1880) – isang dulang alegorikal na nagwagi ng unang gantimpala.
– Isang gintong sing-sing na may nakaukit na mukha ni Cervantes (author ng Don Quixote)

 Bagamat mahusay si Jose , hindi naging kahanga-hanga ang kanyang nakuha sa apat na ataon sa
UST. (1877-1882)
 Pagkaraan ng apat na Taon sa UST, nagpasya si Rizal, sa payo ni Paciano, na ipagpatuloy sa ibang
bansa ang kanyang pag-aaral.

 Kumuha ng isang linya mula sa awitin at ibigay ang pakahulugan nito.
