8. An iron bar magnet is heated to 1000°C and then cooled in a magnetic field free space.
Will it retain magnetism?

9. Street is used for making permanent magnets; whereas soft iron is used for making
electromagnets. Explain why?

10. What is the angle of dip at equatorial plane and at poles. Will a bar magnet rotate only
vertically when placed in poles. Explain?

11. The absolute magnetic permeability  of a specimen of magnetic material is related to


magnetic intensity ‘H’ according to the relation.

12. An iron rod of length 0.5m; and radius 0.02 m; having relative permeability 120 is placed

13. Prove that I = (r – 1)H.

14. The vertical component of earth’s magnetic field at a place is 3 times the horizontal
component. What is the value of angle of dip at this place?

15. An electron in an atom revolves around the nucleons in an orbit of radius 0.534°.
Calculate the equivalent magnetic moment; if the frequency of resolution of electron is

16. Explain how a bar magnet behaves as an equivalent solenoid?

17. A magnet having a magnetic dipole moment of 1.0 × 10 JT is free to rotate in a
horizontal plane having a magnetic field of strength 4 × 10–5 T. Calculate the work done
in rotating the magnet from a direction parallel to the field in a direction making an angle
of 60° with the field?

18. A short bar magnet is placed with its North pole towards north of the earth. A neutral
point is retained on it’s equatorial line at a distance of 0.15 m from the centre of the
magnet. If the horizontal component of the earth’s magnetic field is 0.34 × 10–4J; find the
magnetic dipole moment of the magnet?

19. A circular coil of radius 0.157 m has 50 turns. It is placed; such that its axis is in magnetic
meridian. A dip heddle is supported at the centre of the coil with it’s axis of rotation
horizontal and in the plane of the coil. The angle of dip is 30°; when a current flows
through the coil. The angle of dip becomes 60° on reversing the current. Find the current
in the coil assuming that the magnetic field due to the coil is smaller than the horizontal
component of earth’s magnetic field (Horizontal component of earth’s magnetic field is =
3 × 10–5 T).

20. Two identical short bar magnets each of magnetic moment 12.5 A m 2 are placed at a
separation of 100 cm between their centres; such that their ones are perpendicular to
each other. Find the magnetic field at a point midway between the two magnets.
