The issue of political identity and how people who used to identify themselves in a
certain political party can no longer have trust in their own classification to define their morals or
belief that they once used to stand for is a big current concern. What I have observed is that there
is a slight hope in the future that there is a possibility of bipartisanship within both political
parties.
In Ideological Republican and Group Interest Democrats: The Asymmetry of American
Party Politics, Matt Grossman and David A. Hopkins argue that the Republican Party and the
Democratic Party are fundamentally different, and that the Republican Party is becoming more
conservative, while “broader liberal or leftist movements have faced greater difficulties in
winning political power [within the Democratic Party]” (135). With this reading, it has
confirmed the scared notion that both political parties have unfortunately distanced themselves
from their original political ideals. Unfortunately, it is in consequence of this, that people no
longer know which party they belong to whether it being a Republican, Democrat, Liberal,
Conservative, etc. Due to this, people have had a growing sense of losing a part of their own
identity because of the drastic change in perceptions that their political parties now represent.
However, there is a slight transformation that this ideal might be changing in the future when I
was observing and analyzing panels of opposite political parties having civil conversations of
today’s issues. Representatives Jim McGovern and Tom Reede showed that despite these two
people coming from different political parties, they were able to have a civil and calm discussion
of today’s issues while showing respect to one another. This will have a small, yet powerful
impact in the future of politics and how people see their government because if the government
is supposed to reflect what the American people want to see in their country, what a great
decision but to lead by example. Because once our government is ready to put all feelings and
bias’s aside, then the beginning of change in our policy will begin to arise.
