On March 11, 2011, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 hit off the northeastern coast of Japan. It was a rare, double
quake which had a severe duration of three minutes. This quake was the most powerful to ever hit Japan and the fourth
most powerful quake in the world. The quake caused the seafloor to shift, which caused a tsunami or a giant wave, that
flooded an area of 560 square kilometers. Nineteen thousand people died and over a million buildings were destroyed.
The Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant was in operation at the time and the tsunami flooded the site. The reactors
automatically shut down, but the emergency generator cooling te reactors were destroyed, causing the reactor to
overheat, which led to the nuclear meltdown and the release of radioactive material into the area. It was the second
largest nuclear disaster after Chernobyl.
One hundred fifty four thousand people living in the area were evacuated by the government and many people outside of
the mandatory evacuation zone decided to leave for fear for their own safety. Many of these people are still displaced
today because the area has still not been ruled safe for human habitation.
While no people died immediately from exposure to the radiation, lcal populations of birds and other animals have been
reduced and the effects of exposure to radiation, which may include higher incidence of cancer, may continue in the
future.
