Blog Weebly Lesson Idea-2

Students will create math blogs to log their learning throughout an algebra course. They will summarize each lesson and unit with examples. The blogs can be shared publicly if parents allow to help other students. Creating the blogs requires higher-order thinking as students explain concepts, set goals, and monitor their own learning. The project aims to improve students' understanding of math and ability to explain it to others.

WEBSITE AND CLASSROOM BLOG CREATION TOOLS

Name: Maggie Wilcox

Directions: Using the template below, describe how students could use a blog, wiki, or other
website-creation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade
provide an idea that reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember
higher levels (4-6) require that students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order
thinking; and use technology create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others
beyond their school/classroom. The learning activities and products should be engaging and
meaningful to the students and to others who will view/use/benefit from students’ work. Review
your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi.

This assignment will include all materials from the year

Brief Description of Learning Experience:
Students will be asked to keep track of and journal their lessons throughout the year to use to look
back on for their publication project. This will cover all standards of the year until the project is
assigned and will be continued throughout the class and turned in for a project grade. It will aid
them in studying for tests and quizzes and provide a basis of information for their Online Learning
Project. The teacher will check all blogs at the end of each unit to enter as a quiz grade.

Students will be responsible for creating a blog to log materials and content from each unit and
write a brief description of the lessons involved and include at least one real-world example that
they create. The blog project will begin during the first unit and each week of the first unit will be
summarised in a blog post as homework. Each unit after will be graded as a unit and entered as
a quiz grade. This blog can be used by other students in the class and even by students in other
classes. It can also be shared online if students wish (and parents allow) so that students around
the world can also view and use it.

Level 4b Integration (Routine): To move to this level, the teacher makes sure that students are
exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using current technology tools &
resources at the highest cognitive levels. The teacher has gained competencies in classroom
management, project-based and collaborative group management.

Level 5 Expansion: What distinguishes level 5, from other levels, is the emphasis placed on
learner-centered, personal goal setting, and self-monitoring collaborations. There is a complexity
of digital resources and collaboration tools. The teacher allows for inventiveness, in-depth
experiential learning through analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Students create authentic
products that solve real-world problems through collaboration with diverse groups. We might see
them Skyping with students in other states or countries. We might see them collaborating with
other student populations, businesses, or even governmental agencies to create globally
published products.

This lesson would be either a LoTi Level 4b or Level 5. It requires students to explore and create
their own real world problems based on what they know about the materials already, and
encourages them to set learning goals for themselves and stay up to date on learning materials.
Students must design math problems on their own and provide brief overviews for each unit, and
work together to create the most informatory blog that they can. It also allows them to publish
their blog for students around the world to view and comment on to create the opportunity for
open and appropriate discussion with others.
Importance of technology:
This project could be done using a workbook but students are likely to lose materials and
potentially the notebook itself. By using a website-creation tool they can keep track of everything
in one place where they do not have to worry about keeping track of loose papers. They also
don’t have an excuse to not complete each unit page as they will be given library time to work
on it at least once per unit. Students are also encouraged to incorporate other technology
resources, informational tidbits, and interactive activities around their blog.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing example as a model for your project (whether in part or
whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you “borrowed” from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
This project would have to be done with the permission of parents as students would be given the
opportunity to publish their blogs online. In order to minimise risks to students and myself, students
will be told not to include any personal information about themselves, or any identifying
information about the school or class. This can be monitored by the teacher as each unit will be
graded. I will also require students to create private commenting features so that no comments
will be posted without my approval first.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.
I have never tried an activity like this before that requires such heavy follow up from both myself
and students to keep the blog up to date. I can definitely see a number of problems occurring
regarding upkeep of blogs but the assignments can be adjusted as necessary. I hope to learn
more about my students and their learning styles as well as their organisation skills and their ability
to explain complex math. I hope that this project will help students gain a better practice of
explaining mathematics and therefore help them understand materials on a deeper level.
