monkey. Go with your brothers and sisters now.

Here is the mechanics of the game:

to arrange the words to form a sentence. Be guided with
the colors of each word. Each correct sentence is
equivalent to one point. The group who can paste first
their correct answers on the board will have an
additional one point. If you’re done, make a sound of
your assigned animal.
Am I clear class?

The boy throws the ball.

verb?
2. Statement of the Aim
This morning, we will discuss the voice of the verb:
active and passive. We will only limit to sentences that
contain verbs in the simple tenses.

B. Presentation
Class, take a look at the sentences on the board.
Everybody read the sentences.

1. The boy throws the ball..

2. The girl watered the plants.
3. The woman will scold the boy.

C. Generalization

The voice is the form of a verb that shows if the subject

performs the action. The verb is in the active voice if the
subject in the sentence is the doer of the action.
However, it is in the passive voice if the subject is the
receiver of the action of the verb.

1. The boy throws the ball.

The subject of the sentence is “The boy”.
The verb is “throws”.
It is a transitive verb because it has a direct object.
The direct object is “the ball”.
Its tense is simple present.

The subject does the action.

The voice of the sentence is active because the subject is
the doer of the action.

2. The girl watered the plants.

The subject is “The girl”.

The verb is “watered”.
It is a transitive verb because it has a direct object.
The direct object is “the plants”.
Its tense is simple past.

The subject does the action.

The voice of the sentence is active because the subject is
the doer of the action.

3.The woman will scold the boy.

The subject is “The woman”.
The verb is “will scold”.
It is a transitive verb because it has a direct object.
It tense is simple future.
The subject does the action.
The voice of the sentence is active because the subject is
the doer of the action.

Since you can already identify the voice of the verb, let
us now discuss how to transform active sentence into
passive sentence.

In transforming active to passive sentence, here are the

things you are going to do:
1) Examine the tense of the verb;
2) Move the direct object into the subject’s
location;
3) Change the verb into a be-verb followed by a
verb in a past participle.
4) Place the subject after the verb beginning with a
preposition “by”.

Now let us transform the sentences.

1. The boy throws the ball.

The tense of the verb is simple present.

Let’s place the direct object into the subject’s location.
Since the tense of the verb is simple present, we are
going to use the be-verb is.
The past participle of the verb throw is thrown. So we
are going to change the verb throw into thrown. The
verb now becomes is thrown.

After the verb is “The boy” which is preceded by a

preposition by. As you observed, the subject “The boy”
becomes part of the prepositional phrase and also
becomes the receiver of the action.

Everybody read the sentence.

The ball is thrown by the boy.

2. The girl watered the plants.

The tense of the verb is simple past.

Let us now place the direct object the plants into the
subject’s location.

Since the tense of the verb is simple past, we are going

to use the be-verb was.
The past participle of watered is watered. The verb now
becomes was watered.

After the verb is “The girl” which is preceded by a

preposition by. As you observed, the subject becomes
the receiver of the action.

3. The woman will scold the boy.

The tense of the verb is simple future.

Let’s place the direct object the boy into the subject’s
location.

Since the tense of the verb is simple future, we are going

to use the be-verb will be.
The past participle of the verb scold is scolded. The verb
now becomes will be scolded.

After the verb is “The woman” which is preceded by a

preposition by. As you observed, the subject in becomes
the receiver of the action.

D. Inference

Activity 2
Let’ have a game, class.
Now go to your groups. (Same group)

Here’s the mechanics of the game.

 I will give you active sentences. Transform the
sentences into passive.

rest will receive 1 point.
