DKK 1493 Transport Process Group Assignment 1 Gas Diffusion: Date of Submission

This document contains two questions regarding gas diffusion processes. Question 1 involves calculating the flux of ammonia gas diffusing through nitrogen gas under steady state conditions. Question 2 involves calculating the diffusivity and flux of benzene vapor diffusing from an air filter through a vent pipe to the atmosphere. The document provides temperature, pressure, concentration and other condition data needed to calculate the requested diffusivity coefficients and fluxes for each question.

DKK 1493 TRANSPORT PROCESS

GROUP ASSIGNMENT 1

GAS DIFFUSION

Date of submission
Wednesday, 28 Feb 2018, by late 4 pm at my office.

QUESTION 1

Ammonia gas is diffusing through N2 under steady state conditions with N2 nondiffusing since it
is insoluble in one boundary. The total pressure is 1.013 x 105 Pa and the temperature is 283 K.
The partial pressure of NH3 at one point is 1.333 x 104 Pa and at the other point 20 mm away it is
6.666 x 103 Pa. The DAB for the mixture is 3.5 x 10-5.

i) Calculate the flux of NH3 in kgmol/m2.s

(10 Marks)

ii) Do the same as c(i) but assume that N2 also diffuses; both boundaries are permeable to
both gases and the flux is equimolar counter diffusion. Predict, in which case is the flux
greater.
(5 Marks)

QUESTION 2

Benzene (C6H6) is the simplest organic aromatic hydrocarbon and parent compound of numerous
important aromatic compounds. In benzene processing plant, one air filter is installed before the
vent pipe. The temperature in the air filter and vent is 27 oC while the vent pipe discharging to
the atmosphere at a pressure of 1 atm. The partial pressure of benzene in the air filter is 300
mmHg.
i) Predict the diffusivity coefficient for benzene-air mixture at 350 K using Fuller et al
method.
(5 Marks)

ii) Calculate the new diffusivity coefficient at 27 oC using temperature corrected factor from
Fuller et al. Assuming steady state and benzene is insoluble in air; calculate the flux of
benzene vapor (kgmol/m2s) due to diffusion through the vent pipe to the atmosphere with
a length of 0.5 m.
