Assignment 2 PDF

The document describes an assignment involving modeling and simulating 4 process dynamics problems and 1 control problem. For each problem, students are asked to: draw a schematic; perform a degrees of freedom analysis; develop a mathematical model; simulate the model in Matlab; and present their solutions in a Word document with graphs and code. The 4 process problems include: a conical tank level control system; interacting tank levels; a heat exchanger with temperature dynamics; and a CSTR with reaction temperature/concentration dynamics. The control problem involves deriving a nonlinear model for liquid levels in a 2-tank system.

Assignment (2)

For all the (4) questions below do the following:

• Draw a neat schematic of the process with all variables

• List the assumptions and perform a DOF analysis
• Write a fully specified model of the process
• Use Matlab to simulate the process and show the process variables dynamic responses
• Present your solution in an electronic form using MS Word, including all graphs and
code.

(Q1)
A conical tank with a 20 m2 base area and a height of 5 m, receives water from a feed stream at
an inlet flow rate of 1 m3/min. The exit stream valve has a constant (K) of 2.
a- Model and simulate the liquid level in the tank.
b- A proportional controller was installed on the exit stream of the tank. The level in the
tank is controlled by manipulating a valve at the exit stream. Model and simulate the
liquid level in the tank.

(Q2)
Three cylindrical tanks with cross sectional areas of 10, 5 and 2 m2 respectively are connected in
series in an interacting configuration. Tank1 is receiving a liquid at 10 m3/min volumetric flow
rate. Model and simulate the liquid levels in the tanks.

(Q3)
Liquid stream at 1000 m3/sec is heated from 25 to 60 °C using a double pipe heat exchanger. The
hot utility used is a hot water stream (at 90°C). Using the following data, model and simulate the
exit temperatures of the HX.
Overall heat transfer coeff. (U) = 250 W/m2.K;
Area of heat transfer (As)=465 m2;
Volume of tube side (cold stream) = 500 m3;
Volume of the annulus side (hot stream) = 1000 m3;
Heat capacity of both streams = Cp(T )  9.069  8.712  103T  1.25  106T 2  R , where T

a CSTR in which the following reactions occur:

Using a reactor volume of 5000 m3, model and simulate the temperature and concentrations of
the reactor exit stream.

(Q5)
Consider the two tanks system shown in the diagram. You can assume that the flows through
valves 1 and 2 are proportional to h1 and h2 , respectively. Derive the nonlinear dynamic
model describing the variation of the liquid levels in the two tanks.
Assuming similar sizes for the two tanks with a cross sectional area of 20 cm2, first tank feed = 4
cm3/sec, valves proportionality constants of 20 cm2.5/s, and initial empty tanks. The pump was
switched off initially and was operated after 50 sec to deliver 1 cm3/sec.
