REACTION PAPER IN CEET424

(HIGHWAY ENGINEERING)

Submitted By: Estillore, Johanna Marie T. CEE42

I. Summary

Prelims term was all about Highway planning and Traffic Operations. Highway
planning consists of transportation planning involving roadways, transit terminals,
parking, pedestrian facilities, bikeways, and good movements. It discussed that
highway and transportation planning is one of important function on a city. It helps
us understand transportation in the city. Second is the, traffic Operations. In this
topic, I understood the basic elements of traffic systems and their interaction. Like,
How number of cars affect the daily traffic during rush hour or not. It also explains
how transportation planning affects traffic.

Second, Midterm lessons’ mainly topic is transportation engineering. It consists of

theories of traffic flows. The two macroscopic traffic stream models discussed are
Greenshield and Greenberg. Greenshield Model discussed of how the behavior of
one parameter of traffic flow changes with one another. The two relationship that
Greenshield model has speed and density. And knowing their relation, It turns into
parabolic in shape. Second one is, Greenberg. It is used for any traffic stream. The
two relationship that Greenberg has is speed and density. And also, knowing their
relation, It turns into upward in shape. Overall, These two models are used to
analyze the traffic flow characteristics using observed data and to develop more
traffic flow models.

Finally, For the Final term period – it was all about highway curves and road
earthworks. For the highway curves, It includes spiral, parabolic, reversed,
compound and simple curves. Highway curves are one of the important elements
in designing a highway. And for the earthworks, It discusses how it is important to
analyze and study it during and before the construction of a highway or any
structural projects.

II. Analysis and Evaluation

Transportation engineering is a branch of civil engineering that is involved in the

planning, design, operation, and maintenance of safe and efficient
transportation systems. These systems include roadways, railways, waterways,
and intermodal operations. Typically, the demand is the amount of traffic (people,
cars, railcars, barges) that is expected to use a particular transportation facility,
while the supply is the quantity and type of infrastructure components (roadways,
bridges, pavements, etc.). These systems are typically large and expensive.

And In Highway Engineering, One of the Important element is transportation

science. It has planning, engineering and enforcement. All three of them was
discussed during Prelims, Midterms and Finals. In Transportation Planning, I
learned how every vehicle trip affects roads. This is the way how they evaluate a
traffic. However, there’s lot of obstacles In a roads. For example, Accidents and
Traffic enforcers that isn’t trained well. It’s a kind of simple but it can do traffic
congestion in a second.

During Midterms, I understands the macroscopic traffic stream flows at any types
of roads. This is by evaluating and analyzing if the road is uninterrupted. And if it
involves the density, speed and flow. It must be the Greenshield’s Model. And
Greenberg’s Model if it’s derived analytically through the use of logarithm.
And Lastly, During finals, Curves are taught by how they can be applied in the
highway. Specifically, Spiral, Reverse, Parabolic, Compound, and Simple Curves are
studied. Earhworks is the last topic discussed in highway engineering.
Earthworks are one of an Important Part of Most Civil Engineering Works. Types of
earthworks can include modification of natural slopes to suit the requirements for
transport systems like roads or railways. And in this course, we were taught how to
find the volume end area of an earthwork, the Prismoidal formula , and the
Prismoidal correction.

III. Reaction

During the prelims term, I learned the importance of transportation planning in the
city. Transport demand models helps me to understand even more about highway
planning since it discusses transportation plans in every road. I also learned that in
the transportation system, You’ll know the number of trips in every road in the city.
And finally, It also improves and develops more models to improve transportation
planning in the city.

And in Midterms, Our professor taught us the two traffic flow models which is,
Greenshield and Greenberg. In this models, they are mostly used to analyze the
flow, speed and density in the highway. These models represents the behavior of
one parameter or traffic flow changes with respect to one another.

And finally in Finals, Curves and Earthworks showed me how it is important to

design a curve in a highway. It able us to see how can a curve be appropriate in a
highway and be an important element in designing a highway. And Earthworks
before constructing a highway.

Overall, The topics discussed has one objective. It is to develop more models and
plans just to have a better transportation. And have a safer transportation, too. ,
The topics taught by us were connected and discussed the way we can understand
it more. However, I find the subject really difficult that it requires me lot of time to
study the topics. But, It was made easier for us by our professor. That in the end, I
understood every topic he discussed.

And lastly, I already know I’ll learn a lot of things, since I already knew who the
professor is. So, I’m really grateful and blessed that I became one of his students.
