Module About If-Then Statements

The document discusses if-then statements in mathematics. It defines an if-then statement as having two clauses: an if-clause and a then-clause. It provides an example of an if-then statement and identifies the hypothesis and conclusion. The document also introduces truth tables for if-then statements and discusses how conditional statements can be true or false depending on whether the hypothesis and conclusion are both true or both false. Finally, it provides practice problems for students to convert statements to if-then form and identify the hypothesis and conclusion.

Topic: If- then Statements

REWRITE
 An if-then statement is composed of two clauses: the if- clause and the then- clause.

Conditional statements are formed by joining two statements p and q using the words if
and then.
 p for the if clause and q for the then clause. In symbol:
“If p then q” or p q

 The if(p) statement is called the hypothesis and the then(q) statement is the
conclusion.
Example:
Hypothesis (p): You are a Filipino.
Conclusion (q): You were born in the Philippines
Conditionals: If you are a Filipino, then you were born in the Philippines.
Practice:
1. Cigarette smoking is dangerous to your health.
If-then form __________________________________________________________
Hypothesis _______________________________________
Conclusion _______________________________________
2. It is more fun in the Philippines.
If-then form _________________________________________________________
Hypothesis _______________________________________
Conclusion _______________________________________

 Conditional statements can be true or false. If the hypothesis and the conclusion are
both true or both false.
 The implication p → q is always true except in the case that p is true and q is false.
