General Information
About College:
The group of institutions collectively known as the National Law Universities (NLUs) now number over twenty. Most of them
recruit students using the CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) scores. This is considered the flagship exam, which gives entry
to some of the finest Law colleges in the country. The competition for this is immense. The test includes 200 objective type
multiple choice questions to be answered within a maximum time limit of 120 minutes. These 200 questions are divided into
Legal Aptitude and GK hogging half the total share with 50 questions each. English and Reasoning are worth 40 each while
math which is quite elementary is worth 20. For every wrong answer, a fourth of negative marks gets deducted. Success in this
exam, opens the door towards some of the best national law colleges (NLUs). In spite of the ‘national’ tag associated with the
NLUs, they remain state universities. CLAT is also one of the few law entrances that were conducted on online mode but has
now reverted to the offline avatar.
For long, law lagged behind several other professional and degree courses when it came to prestige and career opportunities,
but now, thanks to the NLUs, it is considered a top career choice. With the opening up of the economy, law grads can now take
up careers in corporate law, international agencies, NGOs, Legal Process Outsourcing (LPOs) firms and academics, besides the
conventional careers centres around litigation and the judiciary. This was the reason for the launch of the five- year integrated
programmes by the NLUs which can be taken up by students immediately after completion of their school.
The Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) in Raipur was established in the year 2003. It is named after the former Chief
Justice and Acting President of India and built on a total area of 65 acres worth land in the state of Chhattisgarh. Courses are
available here at the HNLU right from the UG till doctoral levels. At the UG level, the flagship five- year integrated programme
BA LLB is offered. The LLB of course is the standard degree offered to Common Law countries’ legal study graduates. At the
master’s level, the LLM is offered here. The research-based doctoral programme is also available at the HNLU.
The entire academics here at the HNLU is overseen by the six schools, each with expertise in its own area. These schools are
here for – International Legal Studies, Business & Global Trade Development, Juridical & Social Sciences and for Constitutional
& Administrative Governance. Another is the School of Science, Technology and Sustainable Development (SSTSD). Yet another
one is the School of Administration of Justice, Continuing and Clinical Legal Education (SAJCCLE). Under each school, there are
a further six centres each, thus rendering a total of thirty- six units.
A lot of the research that takes place at the HNLU gets published in their own in-house journals. The best known of them is the
HNLU Journal of Law and Social Sciences. Another is the HNLU Student Bar Journal. As the name suggests, this one is for the
students themselves. The institute has been accredited by the NAAC (National Assessments and Accreditation Council). The
university also brings out an annual quality assurance report. A separate IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) has been
created to this end, to ensure that all the terms of the NAAC are complied with.
The HNLU Raipur is also a part of the Consortium for Education Communication (CEC), set up by the UGC (University Grants
Commission) to improve information dissemination using television. It has also signed up for the NATS (National
Apprenticeship Training Scheme). It is a part the National Academic Depository (NAD) which stores high- quality academic
content for future usage. It collates information from across sources within the country’s academic and research circles. Plus,
it is a signatory to the Fulbright Fellowships. There is an HNLU Lecture Series where prominent personalities, especially from
the legal world, are invited to speak to the students.
There is a thriving student culture here. The annuals sports fest here is known as the Colossus. For basketball, an inter-
university event is held known as the Dunkyard. An annual Justice Hidayatullah Memorial National Moot Court competition is
held with great regards within the peer group. One of the important debate competitions is known as the Aruna Hyde
Memorial Debate. A Debating Premier League (DBL) is also held.
All this and much more has led to the institute securing very high ranks across ranking platforms. The Careers 360 magazine
has placed the HNLU Raipur at rank 15th for the entire country with a AAA+ rating. This in turn has fuelled excellent placement
records here. Some of the key recruiters in recent seasons have been the likes of – Singh & Associates, RRG Associates, ICICI,
Tech Mahindra, Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan, Thomson Reuters, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy, Eastern Book Company and
several others.

Institutions that are promoted by the central/state or provincial Government or Careers360 shortlists over 5000 colleges
across domains each year. Out of these colleges, only those colleges are rated/ranked which provide transparent data
requested by Careers360. The cumulative scores of colleges are then calculated and they are divided into clusters as per their
scores. Careers360 ranks private and government colleges separately as the support system of both types of Institutions is
completely different.
