    risks among issues Building Healthier Communities initiative to address

    WOONSOCKET, R.I., Jan. 14, 2019 -- Now

    that CVS Pharmacy and Aetna Insurance

    have joined forces, this power couple in the

    healthcare arena is poised to make a

    difference in people’s lives, especially those

    who struggle to afford basic care. The $78

    billion deal merged two industry giants, each

    with its own strong history of progressive

    social action initiatives.

    Building Healthier Communities, a $100

    million joint commitment, will be funded

    over five years to deliver a measurable

    impact on the health of communities across

    the United States in three key areas: 

    improving local access to affordable quality

    care; impacting public health challenges; and

    partnering with local communities. "Health

    starts at the community level. By combining

    the capabilities and philanthropic resources

    of CVS Health and Aetna, we can engage

    and empower local communities to address

    their unique health care needs and make a

    real difference," said Larry J. Merlo,

    President and CEO. "Ultimately, we're

    aspiring to deliver better health care which in

    turn creates better communities and a better

    The initiative will continue and expand:


    Free health screenings to identify risk factors for common diseases such as diabetes, hypertension,

    and heart disease;

    Partnerships with local charity organizations to better address needs at the local level;

    Efforts to address societal and environmental factors such as smoking, diet, and access to healthy

    foods, affordable transportation, safe green spaces, and opportunities for outdoor activities;

    Innovative approaches to corralling the nation’s opiod crisis.
