Research Methodology

This document outlines the research methodology for analyzing failures of Google projects. It will first formulate a research problem to analyze reasons for Google failures and learn lessons. It will then analyze selected failed Google projects and market factors through secondary data sources. Lastly, it will propose solutions to overcome such failures in the future by learning from mistakes. The methodology includes collecting secondary data, measuring data through metrics, and analyzing the data to understand reasons for failures and find solutions.

Research Methodology

Research Methodology is a way to systematically solve the research problem. It includes

the various methods and techniques for conducting a research. The research methodology
of our project will be outlined as follows:

Firstly, we will formulate a research problem which

will coincide with the objectives of our research.

Then we will analyse the failures of some selected

Google failed projects and thus, determine the reasons
behind these failures.

Moreover, will also analyse the practical situations of

the market in which failed products persist. This will
be done through the help of secondary statistical data
published in journals, reports etc.

Lastly, we will propose some solutions from the failure

to overcome such product failures in the near future.
Learning lessons from failure and proceeding towards
success is our idea.

 Formulation of Research Problem:

Our research problem is to analyse the failures of Google failed projects and reasons
behind it. And then learning from the mistakes committed during these projects and
applying this knowledge for the wellbeing of others. Simply put, the research
problem could be summarized in a form of research question and that is as follows:

To analyse the Google’s Flops and Failures in order to extract lessons from it for
new start ups and other upcoming projects.

 Research Design:

The research design is a systematic approach that a researcher uses to conduct a

scientific study. Basically, it refers to the overall strategy that we choose to integrate
the different components of the study in a coherent and logical way, thereby,
ensuring we will effectively address the research problem; it constitutes the
blueprint for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data.

Data Collection

 Data Collection: -

Given the nature of the research topic, it is most suitable to employ secondary data
collection method.
The secondary data are those which have already been collected by someone else
which already had been passed through the statistical progress. In this project,
secondary data under consideration will be collected from different secondary
sources namely newspapers, business articles, online journals, internet, reference
books, etc.
The secondary data are readily available from the other sources and as such, there
are no specific collection methods. The researcher can obtain data from the
sources both internal and external to the organization.

 Data Measurement: -

The secondary data which we collected used a measurement tool called Metrics.
The ‘Metric’ is defined as “standard of measurement by which efficiency,
progress, performance, productivity, quality of a deliverable, process, project or
product can be assessed”.

• Most of the secondary data which we collected was result of customer success and
product engagement metric. It include measurement of- product usage/adoption
(sign-in frequency, sharing, etc.), percent of users who take a specific action that
matters, feature usage (usage vs. other features), which customer type is using
certain features, retention or churn rate, quality (e.g. average bugs, net promoter
score) etc. These measurement devices were used by the researchers who produced
the statistical data about Google failures. They gauge the performance of Google’s
product as compared to other successful products. These metrics aid our research
process because with the help of these metrics we were able to analyse the
practical situations of the market in which Google products failed.

 Data Analysis: -

This research study is based upon Google flops and failures in which we will
analyze the reason behind failures and anticipate solutions based on the analysis of
secondary data.

The analysis of secondary data involves closely and carefully weeding through the
data to find data which we can use for our specific purposes, figuring out how that
data applies to our project, and drawing conclusions based on our findings. In this
project, we used research tools for the data analysis that include- graphs, online
polls and other statistical data obtained during research.
