DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
PRE UNIVERSITY TEST

Course: B.Tech Semester: VI

Session: 2017-18 Section: CE-1, CE-2
Subject: Advance Foundation Engineering Sub. Code: NCE -011
Max Marks: 100 Time: 3 hour

SECTION A
A. Attempt all parts. (2x10=20)

1. Define swelling potential and free swell.

2. Define and explain expansive soil with the help of an example.
3. Write the criteria for determination of depth of well foundation.
4. What do you mean by grip length of well? Mention its importance in well foundation.
5. What is Taylor stability number?
6. What is an infinite slope& explain it with the help of a diagram?
7. What are limitations of Westergaard’s theory?
8. Define negative skin friction.
9. What do you mean by settlement of pile group?
10. What are the limitations of the dynamic pile formulae?

SECTION B
B. Attempt any five. Question no. 16,17 and 18 are compulsory (10 x 5 = 50)

11. Explain in detail the Schmertmann’s method of settlement of cohesionless soil.

12. What is the purpose of a soil investigation program and explain the different stages of the
investigation?
13. A 3m wide strip foundation is to be constructed on the surface of a silty soil with c= 20kPa, ϕ=
300 and unit weight of soil is 18kN/m3. The footing is subjected to a vertical load of 200kN/m
run of wall at an eccentricity of 0.25m together with horizontal force of 50kN/m run of wall.
Assuming that the water table is well below the foundation level, estimate the ultimate bearing
capacity of the foundation. Use Meyerhof’s method
14. A group of 9 piles with three piles in a row were driven into soft clay, extending from ground
level to a great depth. The diameter and the length of the piles were 40cm and 20cm
respectively. The unconfined compressive strength of the clay is 80 kPa. If the piles were
placed at 100cm center to center, compute the allowable load on the pile group on the basis of
shear failure criteria for a factor of safety of 2.5.
15. Describe the IS CODE method for calculating bearing capacity of soil in detail with all
factors.
16. Discuss the various remedial measures that can be adopted to rectify the tilts in well
foundation.
17. Discuss the design of single under reamed piles to be installed for founding structures in
expansive soils.
18. A 12m high embankment is inclined on sides at angle 300 to the horizontal. If the shear
strength parameters of the soil are given as c= 15 kN/m2 and ϕ= 200, find the factor of safety
available against slope failure. The unit weight of the soil is 18kN/m3. Taylor stability number
= 0.025.

Section C
C. Attempt any two. Question no. 21 is compulsory (15 x 2= 30)

19. A jetty is sited on 4.5m of very soft clayey soil overlying stiff to very stiff clay. The average
shear strength from 5to 13m is 140kN/m2. Fissured shear strength at 13m is 145kN/m2. For
structural reasons it is desired to use 500mm steel tube piles. Check the penetration length of
13m below sea bed level from the design view point, to carry a safe working load of 400kN.
For the given conditions, adhesion factor = 0.5, bearing capacity factor, Nc = 9.
20. A three legged tower forms an equilateral triangle in plan of side 4.2m. If the total weight of
tower is 420kN and is equally carried by all its leg, compute the increase in the vertical stress
caused in the soil by the installation of the tower at a depth of 4.2m directly below one of the
leg of the tower.
21. Using Barken’s expression of natural frequency and amplitude of vibration, calculate the
change in the percentage amplitude in terms of r if the soil mass participating in the vibration is
23% of m. Also, calculate this change for r= 0.3 and r= 2.
