Essay Answer in About Three Pages: Tagore's Message To The Modern World

Tagore visited Europe in 1921 and was disappointed by the greed and materialism he witnessed. Factories had made the environment ugly and people only cared about accumulating wealth, with no love for nature, humanity, or spiritual fulfillment. He felt a "great doom" looming over Europe. The Voice of Humanity lecture Tagore gave in Italy in the lead up to World War II criticized Europe's damaging focus on industrialization and science at the expense of human relationships and spirituality. He argued true happiness comes from realizing our connection to the infinite, not material possessions alone. Only by embracing our divine nature and spiritual side can humanity attain happiness and prosperity.
