CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

Teachers have their own ways of teaching and disciplining their students.

They also have their own tactics on how to tackle the lesson in some different ways

to make their students interested with the topic. The teacher's way of teaching can

help the students to improve their abilities as an individual.

Students having strict teachers often wonder what are the reasons why their

teachers are acting that way. Teachers are considered as the second parents of the

student because they teach them, however what the teacher experiences also affects

her way of teaching.

Students also have their different perceptions about their strict teachers. Some

says that their teachers are acting that way because of their problems and personal

issues. Being a strict teacher can also affect the students both positively and

negatively. This can cause the student to not attend the class, becoming coward,

avoiding their teachers, and having low self-esteem. Its positive effects could be that

having strict teachers can motivate the student to be serious with their studies and to

be responsible with their every actions.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

The theoretical framework used to guide this study is based upon the concept’s

causes, effects, and coping backgrounds.

1. Causes

When teacher’s personalities are discussed, the two most common

types mentioned are strict and lenient. There is no right or wrong personality

for an educator to possess; however, there are pros and cons to each

personality and certain classroom problem may result from the educator’s

personality.

Teacher’s personality may be difficult for educators to exam because

many educators instruct according to inherent nature. Therefore, reflecting

upon personality can cause personal distress because no educator wants to

feel like he is impeding the classroom environment. It should be noted that

this is not to tell educators what personalities they should possess, but to

assist in case a certain personality is impeding the classroom. Some educators

try to emulate a military style regime by taking strictness to the highest

possible level. However, being strict can be a useful class management tool,

but remember for everything gained there is something lost.

2. Effect

A strict but fair teacher, encourages a serious learning environment

where students are held accountable for their learning and other’s learning.

They have to learn self-discipline and to be focused to get ahead in the world,

and this teacher will enable that learning.

Teacher efficacy has an effect on his/her student’s academic

performance. It is important that teacher’s believes in themselves and in their

abilities a role model and educator, because it plays an important role on their

student’s performance and self-perception. Being strict doesn’t necessarily

make a good teacher. Having a control over a classroom is important. But

understanding your background as a student, helping you master the concept

and giving you positive reinforcement along the way are good straregies that

teachers use to make sure to students to learn.

3. Coping

Put yourself on your teacher’s shoes. Though you may think that your

teacher is the meanest person in the world, you should try having some

compassion to see if there may be something more going on. Try to think

about why your teacher is being “mean” and if this because your teacher feels

being disrespected in the classroom. Work with your teacher not against

them.

If you’re dealing with a mean teacher, then your natural impose

maybe to prove your teacher wrong, to make your teacher bad about

themselves, or just to be a wise guy in the classroom.

Be positive instead of complaining. Another way to deal with a mean

teacher is to work on being positive in the classroom, instead of arguing and

complaining about every little thing. Being more positive toward your teacher

will help set a more positive tone in the classroom, and it should lead your

teacher to be less mean. Try to focus on the things you do like about the

learning experience.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Empirical research on the education production traditionally has examined how

teachers and their backgrounds characteristics contribute to students’ performance on

standardized tests (Hanushek & Rivkin, 2010; Todd & Wobehavior lpin, 2003).

However, a previous study indicates that student learning is multidimensional, with

many factors beyond their core academic knowledge as important contributors to

both short- and long-term success. Psychologist find that emotion and personality

influence the quality of one’s thinking (Baron, 1982) and how much a child learn in

school (Duckworth, Quinn, & Tsukayama, 2012) therefore, a teacher’s way of

teaching can really influence the behaviour of the students. However, according to

Ajala ( 1995.4) as cited in Oni, (2010) “ The environment outside the school may

have great effects on the student and may contribute to his behavioural problems”

which means not only the environment in the school will affect the student but also

the environment. Dobson (1984:7) as cited by Oni (2010) also stated that, the

traditional concept of morality is dead among the majority of high school students

today.

Based on the two assertions mentioned above, it is very clear that there is every

need to guide the students into the right paths because, that is one of the function of

the school. The school served as an agent of socialization, where people can be

taught good morals among other things. In a research conducted by Corbett (2002)

nearly 400 students answered that to encourage them to care more about their

learning, the school must make sure that the teachers must act in ways that

demonstrate of how much they care. In that same study, students defined good

teacher as:

 Made sure that students did their work.

 Controlled the classroom.

 Were willing to help students whenever and however the students wanted

help.

 Explain assignments and content clearly.

 Varied the classroom routine.

 Took the time to get to know the students and their circumstances.

These students admitted that their default response to most assignments was to

ignore, them which understandably gave the impression that they cared little about

learning. Nevertheless, students liked teachers who successfully combated this habit.

An interviewee of this study explained, I like the ones that don't allow excuses. It's

my turn to get an education. I need to have someone to tell me when I'm tired and

feel like not doing the work that I should do it anyway. If they don't be after you,

you'll slide and never do the work. You won't just learn nothing if they don't stay on

you. Teachers nagged students in many ways--by consistently checking homework,

offering quite individual reminders, giving rewards, and calling of parents. Another

explained, a student didn't do his work, the teacher is hollering and screaming, "Do

your work and sit down!". This makes the ones that want to learn go slower. It

makes your grade sink down. It just messes it up for you. The teacher is trying to

handle everybody and can't. Another student pointed out the difference between

strict and not-so-strict teachers. A not-so-strict teacher just let you do what you

won't, they don't get a point across. Strict teachers get a point across. " I wanted a

teacher who is strict enough for me to learn." In John Kenney's study, " Behaviour in

school is inseparable from achievement ". That's the opening line of Tom Bennett's

behaviour report titled "Creating a Culture". How well we behave in school has a

massive impact on how well we do academically. Getting a good grip on one's

behaviour as early as possible are absolutely crucial and teachers are in unique

position to help. Differences in philosophy lead to different approaches set into three

distinct categories: soft, mean, and strict. Strict has become a dirty word in teaching

circles. This is birthed from a lot of bad history: once upon a time, teachers were not

only strict, they were often outright mean. It is important to make a distinction

between being mean and being strict. Being mean is as it reads: mean teachers

belittle their students. No one wants a mean teacher -- school leaders, teachers,

parents, and students alike. Being strict is not the same as being mean. A strict

teacher has sky-high, unwavering expectations for behavior and this is clearly

communicated in what they say and do. They have bright lines: students know

exactly what to do and when to do it and are acutely aware of what consequence will

ensue if they move away from the expectation. Their interactions with students, in

contrast with a mean teacher, are highly respectful.
