Assignment On Spring Design

This document contains 5 assignments related to the design of springs. The assignments involve calculating spring dimensions like thickness, deflection, radius of curvature, wire diameter, number of turns, and free length for different types of springs, including a vehicle leaf spring, helical compression springs, and a closed coiled helical spring for a boiler safety valve. The springs are made of materials like steel and chrome-vanadium steel, and are designed to operate under various loads and specifications.

Assignment on : Module 6 (Design of Springs)

1. A semi-elliptical Laminated vehicle spring carries a load of 4 kN. It consists of Seven leaves of 65
mm width, two of which are Full length. The spring is to 1.1 m long and attached to the axle by U-
bolts 80 mm apart. If the allowable stress is 350 MPa. Determine-
i) Thickness of leaves
ii) Deflection of spring
iii) Radius of curvature

2. A semi-elliptical multi-leaf spring is used for the suspension of the rear axle of a truck. It consists
of two extra full length leaves & ten graduated-length leaves including the master leaf. The centre-
to-centre distance between the spring eyes is 1.2 m. The leaves are made of steel 55Si2Mo90(Syt
= 1500 N/mm2), the factor of safety is 2.5. The spring is to be designed for a maximum force of
30 kN. The leaves are prestressed so as to equalize stresses in all leaves.

3. A helical compression spring is subjected to a maximum force of 5000 N with a corresponding

deflection 70 mm . The spring operates over a 50 mm diameter rod. Determine –wire diameter,
no of turns, free length ,pitch, helix angle.
The properties of spring material are-
2000 1200
Su= MPa Sys= MPa G = 80000 MPa where d= wire diameter.
𝑑 0.17 𝑑 0.17
4. A helical spring is subjected to the load varying from 500 N to 1100 N having spring index of 6.
Free length of spring is to lie between 100 mm to 150 mm. The maximum compression under the
variation of load is 3 cm. Assume stresses for spring material and G= 0.8 x 105 N/mm2 . Design the
spring and find the energy stored in the spring.

5. A closed coiled helical compression spring is used for a boiler safety valve which is required to
blow steam at the pressure of 1.5 N/mm2. The diameter of the valve is 50 mm. The initial
compression of the spring is 40 mm and the lift is limited to 20 mm. No of cycles of load are
expected to be about 105. The material of the spring is chrome-vanadium steel for which the
strength values are-

2000 1200
Su=𝑑0.17 MPa Sys=𝑑0.17 MPa G = 80000 MPa

i) Find maximum load on the spring

ii) Select suitable value for spring index and find wahl’s factor
iii) Using static approach decide the wire dia. of the spring & mean coil diameter
iv) Decide no of active turns
v) Decide free length, solid length. Check for solid stress.
