SECTION-A (10 Marks each)

1. Research is a set of sequential procedures known as research process. Discuss briefly each step
of research process. (10)

2. Discuss the need for Business Research. What are broad areas for Business Research? What are
limitations in applying scientific research methods to business research methods? (4+3+3)

3. (a) What are secondary data? How do you evaluate these for their use in your research?
(b) A Manager in the shop floor felt that “a worker” is performing work at the normal pace
only during “his presence” but the moment he walks away from the shop floor, the
worker would go back to his old habits of wasting time and thus the output is reduced at
the end. On being asked to explain his low output, the worker would give a number of
reasons such as tool bit was not available; the fan belt of the drive was loose etc. The
manager thus decided to bring a college student, who was doing engineering, one day
to the shop floor and asked him to watch the behavior of the said worker along with
that of others. The student would thus go around the shop floor as if he had come for
training and report his findings to the manager at the end of the day.
Explain the nature of observation that the manager has envisaged in this case. Will his
findings be free of distortion? Give reasons. (5+5)

4. (a) A pathologist wants to determine on the basis of a sample study, the mean time
required to complete a certain analysis so that he may be 98% confident that the mean
may remain within ±3 days of the true mean. As per the records, the population
variance is 81 days. What must be the size of the sample for the study? (You can take
the Z- value to be 2.33)
(b) Discuss systematic random sampling technique in detail. Suppose In your study, the
population size is 200, and the population elements are numbered from 1 to 200. A
sample of size 20 is required to be chosen by using systematic sampling technique.
Discuss how you will go about it. If the first sample chosen is at no.7, what will be the
no. of second, the third and the 20th sample? (5+5)

5. (a) What are Ranking Scale and Rating Scales? How the two differ?
(b) Discuss Paired Comparison technique. (5+5)

6. What are the major divisions of and considerations in writing a Business Research Report?

7. What “Blue print” is to construction of a house, “Research Design is to conduct a study”. Justify
the statement, and discuss briefly different research designs.

Section-B (15 marks each)

8. A large supermarket has adopted a new strategy to increase its sales. It has adopted a few
consumer friendly policies and is using video clips of 15 minutes to propagate the new policies.
The following table provides data about the number of video clips shown in a randomly selected
day and the sales turnover of the supermarket in the corresponding day:

No. of Video Sales No. of Video Sales

Days clips shown (Rs. in lacs) Days clips shown (Rs. in lacs)
1 20 1.50 7 40 3.10
2 20 2.10 8 40 3.30
3 20 1.40 9 40 3.00
4 30 1.80 10 50 2.70
5 30 2.30 11 50 3.10
6 30 2.70 12 50 3.40

i. Write the estimating equation of sales on video clips shown.

ii. Calculate the coefficient of determination and interpret it.
iii. On any day when 45 clips are shown, what will be the estimated sales?
(6+6++3)

9. A leading oil company claims that its engine oil improves its engine efficiency. To verify this
claim, the company’s Brand A is compared with two other competing brands B and C. The data
of the survey consists of the kilometer per litre consumption for a combination of city and
highway travel, and are as follows:
Brand
A B C
1 36 24 23
2 29 26 22
3 25 24 25
4 40 20 18

i. Establish suitable null and alternative hypotheses for testing the claim of the company.
ii. Construct relevant table for analysis.
iii. Can you conclude that the company’s Brand A is superior to other Brands based on
their
averages. Test at 5% level of significance. (Use ANOVA)
