Tutorial 2: Mechanics of Solids 10B11CE311 07/08/2013

This document contains 4 mechanics of solids problems involving stresses and strains. Problem 1 asks to determine stresses in a steel rod connecting two parallel walls when temperature changes. Problem 2 involves stresses in a composite section of a steel rod through a copper tube when temperature decreases. Problem 3 asks to find the force required to punch a square hole in steel plate given ultimate shearing stress. Problem 4 asks to find resultant stress on an inclined plane given normal stresses on perpendicular planes.

1. Two parallel walls 10m apart are stayed together by a steel rod of 50mm diameter
passing through plates and nuts at both ends. The nuts are tightened, when the rod is at a
temperature 50oC. Determine the stresses in the rod when the temperature falls to 15oC, if
(i) the ends do not yield and (ii) the ends yield by 10mm. (Take E = 2*105 N/mm2 and α
= 0.0000125/ oC)

2. A steel rod of 20mm diameter passes centrally through a copper tube of external and
internal diameter of 40mm and 24mm respectively. The composite section is rigidly fixed
with nuts and washers of negligible thickness. The nuts are tightened until there is a
tension of 150kN in the rod. Find the stresses in the rod and the tube if the temperature of
the composite section is reduced by 50oC, if Esteel = 2*105N/mm2, Ecopper =
1.2*105N/mm2, αs = 0.000012/ oC and αc = 0.000018/ oC

3. If the ultimate shearing stress of mild steel is 390 N/mm2, find the force required to
punch a square hole of side 20mmin a mild steel plate 15mm thick. What is the stress on
punch.

4. At a point in a strained material the normal stresses on two mutually perpendicular

planes are 100 N/mm2 (Comp.) and 80 N/mm2 (Tens.). Find the resultant intensity of
stress on a plane inclined at 75o to the plane of maximum stress.
