Fluid Mechanics Mid-exam 04/05/2019
2. A triangular plate of 1 meter base and 1.5 meter height as shown in figure 1 is immersed
in water. The plane of the plate is inclined at 30o with the free surface and the base is
parallel to and at a depth of 2 meters from the water surface. Find the total pressure on the
plate and the position of the center of pressure. (4 Points)
Fig. 1
3. Air flows steadily through the variable area pipe shown in Fig.2. Determine the flowrate
if viscous and compressibility effects are negligible. (5 Points)
Fig. 2
4. A converging elbow turns water through an angle of 135 o in a vertical plane as shown in
Fig. 3. The flow cross section diameter is 400 mm at the elbow inlet, section (1), and 200
mm at the elbow outlet, section (2). The elbow flow passage volume is 0.5 m3 between
sections (1) and (2). The water volume flowrate is 0.3 m3/s and the elbow inlet and outlet
pressures are 300 kPa and 200 kPa. The elbow mass is 50 kg. Calculate the horizontal (x
direction) and vertical (z direction) anchoring forces required to hold the elbow in place.
