Sugar in Coke Lab Report Sheet

The document summarizes a lab experiment to determine the amount of sugar in a 12 ounce can of Coke using a calibration curve. A series of sugar solutions were made with varying concentrations and their densities were measured. This was used to create a calibration curve correlating sugar concentration to density. The density of a sample of Coke was measured and used in the calibration curve equation to find the sugar concentration in Coke. This value was then used to calculate that there is 34.4909 grams of sugar in a 12 ounce can of Coke, with an 11.56% error compared to the labeled amount of 39 grams. Sources of error include imprecise measurements of water, sugar or solution amounts during the experiment.

Sugar in Coke Lab Report Sheet:

Name___________________________ Date______10/23/19______
Provide a brief statement of the purpose of this activity and explain the idea behind a calibration
curve.

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the amount of sugar contained in a 12 fl. Ounce
can of Coke (in volume). Using a calibration curve will show us the relationship between density and
mass of sugar in the solution, and help determine the unknown factor (how much sugar is
contained in a Coke can).

Dissolved sugar per mL solution

Report the amount of sugar in 1 mL and 1 can of coke, showing any necessary calculations.

To find the amount of sugar in 1mL of Coke, I took the density of the Coke that we found (1.029
g/mL) and plugged it into “y” in our graph’s formula, then solved algebraically for “x”.

y = 0.3879x + 0.9913
1.029= 0.3879x + 0.9913
x= 0.097189997

amount of sugar in 1mL of Coke= 0.097189997g

To find the amount of sugar in 1 can of Coke, I multiplied the amount of mL in 12 fl ounces of Coke
(354.882 mL) and the amount of sugar in 1 mL of Coke.

354.882mL x 0.097189997g/mL=

34.4909 g of sugar in a can of coke

Present the percent error for your amount of sugar in a can of coke with respect to the number
given on the label, showing any necessary calculations.

Since the amount of sugar in a can of Coke is presented on the label as 39.00g, the percent error
would be:
[(|34.4909g-39.00g|)/39.00g] x 100 =11.56%
Based upon if your value is greater or less than the labeled sugar content, provide any valid sources
of error

Since our value is less than the labeled sugar content, our error could stem from measuring any
amounts of water, sugar, or solution incorrectly. We could have spilled some sugar, resulting in a
whole different set of measurements (especially density). We also could have measured some
substances that were not necessarily pure, which also could have affected our data.
