S3 B.Tech Production Engineering ME2004D Fluid Mechanics and Machinery Assignment 7 1. An experimental inward flow reaction turbine rotates at 370 rpm. The wheel vanes are radial at inlet and the inner diameter of the wheel is half the outer diameter. The constant velocity of flow in the wheel is 2 m/s. water enters the wheel at an angle of 10°-4’ to the tangent to the wheel at inlet. The breadth of the wheel at inlet is 75mm and the area of flow blocked by the vanes is 5% of the gross area of flow at inlet. Find- a. The net head available at the wheel b. The wheel vane angle at the outlet c. The outer and inner diameters of the wheel d. The theoretical power developed by the wheel 2. An inward flow reaction turbine with a supply of 550 l/s under a head of 15m develops 74.57 kW at 375 rpm. The inner and outer diameters of the runner are 50cm and 75 cm. The velocity of water at exit is 3 m/s. Assuming the discharge radial and width of the wheel constant, find the overall and hydraulic efficiencies and the inlet angles of the guide and wheel vanes. 3.An inward flow reaction turbine has external and internal diameters as 0.9m and 0.45m respectively. The turbine is running at 200 rpm and width of the turbine at inlet is 200 mm. The velocity of flow through the runner is constant and is equal to 1.8 m/s. The guide blades make an angle of 10° to the tangent of the wheel and the discharge at the outlet of the turbine is radial. Determine- a. The absolute velocity of water at inlet to the runner b. The velocity of whirl at inlet c. The relative velocity at inlet d. The runner blade angles e. Width of the runner at outlet f. Mass of water flowing through the runner per second g. Head at the inlet of the turbine h. Power developed and the hydraulic efficiency of the turbine 4. A reaction turbine works at 450 rpm under a head of 120 m. Its diameter at inlet is 120 cm and the flow area is 0.4 m2. The angles made by absolute and relative velocities at inlet are 20 and 60 respectively with the tangential velocity. Determine- a. The volume flow rate b. The power developed c. Hydraulic efficiency Assume whirl at outlet to be zero. 5. An inward flow reaction turbine has external and internal diameters as 1.0 m and 0.6 m respectively. The hydraulic efficiency of the turbine is 90% when the head of the turbine is 36 m. The velocity of flow at outlet is 2.5 m/s and the discharge at outlet is radial. If the vane angle at outlet is 15 and the width of the wheel is 100mm at inlet and outlet, determine- a. The guide blade angle b. Speed of the turbine c. Vane angle of the runner at inlet d. Volume flow rate of the turbine e. Power developed
