1.1 Personalised Learning Plan

Your Name: Student ID: Your Managers (Pod Tutors): Review Period:
Daniel-Florian Vlad 1710588 Guy Parrot Introduction Phase & Phase 1

You may have been used to lots of input from your teachers on what you need to do to improve. However, this support is much less evident
in Higher Education, where you are expected to develop your skills as an Independent Learner. Being an Independent Learner means
being able to drive your own learning, taking responsibility for it, appraising yourself honestly.

You own this document, and it is what you make it. A Personalised Learning Plan which is completed as you go along and with care can
help you to see where you are doing well, to understand yourself better and to identify where you need to improve. It will also help you to
look for the help that you will need.

At the end of Phase 1 you should show your completed plan to your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT), who is there to coach you throughout
your studies at the University of Bedfordshire.

The document is divided into 10 sections. Each section is equally weighted apart from Part Five- Practice Week 1 which is worth 20%.

You can find your PAT by going to your BREO gateway and selecting SITS/eVision.

You should contact your PAT now (or at least as soon as you know who your PAT is, as it normally takes a week or two for the University
system to kick in) to introduce yourself. You should make an appointment to see your PAT in the early part of Phase 2, but you are
welcome to see them earlier - and at any time during your studies - if you need to discuss an academic issue with someone other than your
Unit team, Course Coordinator or Learning Community Tutors.

Part One – Exploring Belbin
This section is based on the work that you completed in class in the Introduction Phase Week 1 Pod Session 1
In your first Business Pod session you completed a Belbin profile to analyse your preferences in terms of team roles.

From the in-class self-analysis, my strongest preferences were: Teamworker

My allowable weaknesses (see handout) are therefore: The fact that as a teamworker ,I am indecisive in crunch situations, but I
avoid confrontation. (Belbin.com, 2017)

Do you feel that this is accurate? Why/Why not? What insights did you have from completing this exercise into how you work as
part of a team? How do you manage your allowable weaknesses? What evidence from your previous experiences of working in
groups can you provide to evidence your findings?

The team roles discover by using Belbin profile were accurate and that have been proven when I worked with my team in some
situations. As an example I can say that I was trying to help my teammates every time when they were struggling with something
so I show my teamworker type. The fact that I am indecisive in crunch situations is not really a problem because my team is
formed by resource investigators and implementer who make us to use the resources and start the action.I have know from
previous group work that I am a teamworker because every time I tried to do as much work as I can ,help others and avoid
confrontations. Belbin.com, 2017)

What were the preferences of others in your group? On the day that you completed the analysis, what did you collectively feel
would be the impact of these preferences on how your group might function?

AB1.1 Personalised Learning Plan Template

As I said above ,my team is formed by 2 resource investigators ,an implementer and me as a teamworker ,which is a great thing
because we complete each other ,froming a great team. After we find out our profiles ,we talked about how can we use this in
next group projects for best results. Belbin.com, 2017).

Complete the remainder of this box at the end of Phase 1:

Looking back, did you see your group using these roles? If yes, then how? If no, then why not? Looking at your own
performance, did you feel that you contributed strongly to your group? How? Could you see your Belbin profile at work? What
evidence can you provide to prove this? What do you think your fellow group members will be saying about you? When you move
into your next group in the Business Pod, what do you think you need to do differently? What help might you need?

I think that knowing our Belbin profiles from the beginning was a good thing because that helped us to work better as a group and
give everybody a good task for his type. After doing some work with my group I can say that we work good together because
everybody was using their roles , resource investigators were doing a great job an motivated us to do the same thing ,the
implementer made us to start the action and do some work and I helped each one by explaining them what I understand and
what I think that we need to do to complete the task .I think that my group is satisfied with my work but I can improve my time
allocated for work and my patience to listen every opinion before I expose mine and I will try to improve this in the next group that
I will be in. I can say that I am ok without any help because I understand which are my mistake but I know that I can talk with the
teachers every time when I need help. Belbin.com, 2017)

Hint 1: The Belbin model is Meredith Belbin’s intellectual property. You MUST reference the Belbin model when you refer to it. It
is ok in this instance to reference material on the Belbin website. You can follow the link from the Weekly Learning Block. See the
Study Hub Online for help on how to reference from a website.
Hint 2: Strong undergraduates provide lots of evidence. Evidence can be from referenced academic sources or from your own
experience. This is harder to reference, but you can use meeting notes and other documents.
Hint 3: Go to the Weekly Learning Block for the Intro Phase Week 1 for more information on Belbin including the handout given
out in class
Hint 4: You may be able to draw on experiences from non-academic teams, eg if you are involved in a team sport or have taken
part in a theatrical production these would be valid experiences to use to support your analysis.
Hint 5: If you were not in class you can still complete the self-analysis; see your Learning Community tutors for the questionnaire.

Part Two – Exploring Tuckman
This section is based on the work that you completed during Introduction Phase Week 1 Pod Session 2
In your second Business Pod session you explored Tuckman’s model of group development. What did you discover about how
groups work? Did you feel that the model is helpful? Why/why not? Which stage did your group feel that they were at and what
evidence can you provide to prove this?

According to Tuckman theory my group was in Storming because In this stage "...participants form opinions about the character and
integrity of the other participants and feel compelled to voice these opinions if they find someone shirking responsibility or attempting to dominate.
Sometimes participants question the actions or decision of the leader as the expedition grows harder..." (Leadership the Outward Bound Way: Becoming
a Better Leader in the Workplace By Outward Bound USA, Rob Chatfield ISBN 9781594850332)
I think that people from a group must pass all stages before becoming a well develop team, because every person is different and we need to
discover each other before getting to work good together and Tuckman model helped us to understand and put this in practice. I felt that we are not
yet a team when we were arguing on different ideas without trying to understand each other for real.

Complete the remainder of this box at the end of Phase 1:

Looking back on the performance of your group during the phase, did you evolve? How do you know and how can you evidence
this? Do you think your group got as far as the Performing stage? If not, what held you back, and what would you as an individual
do next time to ensure a smooth group development? Do you think you will experience any mourning as you move on to a new
group in Phase 2?
After working together for this phase I feel that my team is in Norming stage because we started to work good as a team but we
have some things to improve before we hit performing stage. I think that more dedicated time and more involvement in the work
from me and from other members too will help us to become a team which performs.
I think that working with a new team will hit performing stage easier and faster because every member know Tuckman stages of
group development now and can apply them . (Belbin.com,2017,

Hint 1: The Tuckman model is Bruce Tuckman’s intellectual property. Therefore you MUST reference the Tuckman Stages of
Group Development model when you refer to it. Where can you find a credible source of information about Tuckman? Wikipedia
is NOT credible!
Hint 2: If you don’t think that this model works well, there are others which you could write about. Don’t forget to reference any
other models that you use.
Hint 3: Do NOT use this section as an excuse to gripe about other team members. Rather, you should consider your contribution
to the group
Hint 4: Go to the Weekly Learning Block for the Intro Phase Week 1 for more information on Tuckman.

Part Three – Different kinds of students
This section is based on the work that you completed during the Intro Phase Week 2 Session 2
In this session we explored different kinds of students, their motivations and goals. What did you discover about yourself in this
session? You should refer in particular to”PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Explained”.

I discovered that I am a typical type of student mainly but I have some attributes from every type like , I know that my knowledge
and education is the most important and I try to work for all courses as a University Smart Student but, I also get bored very easy
of things that I am not interested in like a Bored student. (Breo.beds.ac.uk, 2017)

Complete the remainder of this box at the end of Phase 1:

Looking back over Phase 1, are you turning out to be the kind of student that you wanted to be? What obstacles/distractions are
you finding on the way? What help do you think you might need now or in the future to help you to achieve the degree
classification that you want? You should use the main headings in ”PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Explained”.

I am proud with what I do for my education , trying to become University Smart Student but, I know that I am not yet there and I
can improve some things about me like :to organise my time better ,put more questions about the task ,be sure that I know
exactly what I need to do .I am sure that the only thing that I need to get my degree is motivation because I know that I am
capable enough to do it and I have that when I think about my goal which is to have a good job and a good life for me and my
family.
(Breo.beds.ac.uk, 2017)

Hint 1: If you go to the Weekly Learning Block for the Intro Phase Week 2 you will find the information about different types of
students which we covered in class. These are the types that you need to use.
Hint 2: You will find ”PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Explained” on the wall in your Pod space.

Part Six - Reflecting on working with a real client - Practice Week 1
During Phase 1 you took part in a Practice Week, working on a real case. You should now provide a detailed reflection about
your experience of Practice Week, focusing on your own contributions. How did it go? What did you learn? Did you meet the
client objectives set out for Week 1? How do you know? Do you think the client will be impressed with your contribution so far?
Do you think that your team is impressed with your contribution?

Part Seven - Reflecting back on what you learned in Phase 1

You should make notes on this section as you complete each week, and then complete the remainder of this box at the end of Phase 1:

In this section you should reflect back on your learning through the Introduction Phase and Phase 1. What progress have you made since you joined?
What are you most proud of? What have you struggled with? You could include your thoughts on the Six Thinking Hats model, segmentation/pen
portraits and project management, as well as your reflection on how your presentations skills evolved from the first to the second presentation that you
completed.

My opinion about my improvement as a student till this moment is that I learned a lot of things which are going to be helpful for next steps of my
education. I am proud of the fact that I like the course and I like to find new information regarding this every session so it is easier for me to understand
information, study and learn new things and put them in practice. It was not easy to get use to all this new things ,but I did it and now I can say that I am
prepared to put 100% in my education. I also gained better presentation , talking and writing skills after the phase 1.

Hint 1: Don’t forget to provide evidence for what you say

Hint 2: If you use some theory in this section, don’t forget to provide references
Hint 3: You will be reflecting on your Practice Week activity in another section, so you do not need to discuss it here, unless you are using it to support
analysis of learning elsewhere

Part Nine – Objective Setting for Phase 3

Complete the remainder of this box at the end of Phase 1:

Thinking about the feedback that you have received before, and using the information that you have already written in this document, think
about how you want to improve your learning and performance in the future. The skills we have focused on so far will be used again and
built on in Phase 3. Based on your analysis of learning and performance in this phase, what do you plan to do to improve? Be really
specific about what you need to do differently.

The objectives below are the objectives we are setting for Phase 3. You may also set another objective of your own. Consider whether you need to do
more to meet and consolidate the objectives from this phase. Remember that enhancing your strengths can be at least as important as remedying
weaknesses.
