SECTION A: Reading Comprehension

Read the text and circle the correct option, true (T) or false (F).

Vincent Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh was born in Zundert, a small village in the South of the Netherlands, in 1853. He had
two younger brothers and three younger sisters. At school, he was very good at languages: he spoke
English, French, German and Dutch. This helped him get work with an international artist. He worked with
his company in London and Paris and travelled a lot. But after some years, he lost his job and for the next
six years of his life he worked as a teacher.

In 1880 Vincent decided to become an artist. His first paintings were dark and depressing and nobody
bought them. Vincent moved to Paris and started studying the works of the French impressionists. He
discovered the power of colour and his paintings changed a lot, but still people did not buy them. In 1888
he moved to Provence in the South of France and here he painted some of his most famous paintings. As
a painter, this was one of the best times in his life. But he was depressed and he suffered from
hallucinations. He did not eat well, drank heavily and he was very poor. One night, after fighting with his
friend, Gaugin, he cut off a piece of his left ear.

In 1890 Vincent Van Gogh committed suicide at the age of 37: he shot himself in the chest with a revolver.
He died two days later. The world discovered his genius as an artist and the power of his paintings only
after his death. He is now one of the world’s most famous painters.
