Concept, features and educational application of
project based learning
Introduction:-
Project based learning is a method of teaching that
presents students with a problem or challenge to solve, requires
them to gather information from various resources, and asks
them to come up with an original solution that ends in a
product or performance, projects are great learning tools
because they challenge students to work together, think in new
ways, use a variety of linguistic, content, and social skills and
incorporate creativity. PBL is an excellent approach to providing
multiple options for students with different learning preferences
and linguistic levels. Projects can engage students in a way that
other types of class room activities generally do not, which to
better managed classes and more effective learning. Projects
should be tied to the curriculum and allow students to apply
their knowledge in ways that lead to deep, meaningful learning
and real communication often projects are long-term endeauors
that last weeks or months but this is not essential. Although
short term projects they can also be very effective. If you have a
very fall curriculum or are new to project based learning,
consider starting out with a shorter, simpler project. Projects
are appropriate for all ages and linguistic levels; it is up to the
teacher to design a project that is age and level appropriate.
Characteristics of PBL:-
Project based learning emphasizes learning activities that
are long-term, interdisciplinary and student centered.
According to W.H Kilpatrick “A project is unit of whole hearted
purposeful activity carried on preferably in its natural setting”
life that has been impoted into schools”.
Unlike traditional teacher-led classroom activities, students
often must organize their own work and manage their own time
in a project based class. Project based instruction differs from
traditional inquiry by its emphasis on students’ collaborative or
individual artifact construction to represent what is being
learned. Characteristics of PBL are as follows:-
i) It is organized around an open ended driuing question or
challenge.
ii) PBL creates a need to know essential content and skills.
iii) Lit requires inquiry to learn and/or create something, new.
iv) PBL requires critical thinking, problem solving,
collaboration, and various forms of communication, often
known as “21st century skills”.
v) It allows some degree of student voice and choice.
vi) PBL incorporates feedback and revision.
vii) PBL results in a publicity presented product or
performance.
Project based learning also gives students the opportunities
to explore problems and challenges that have real world
application increasing of skills and concepts.
Steps of Project based learning:-
Five steps of PBL are:-
1) Creating Situation.
2) Choosing the Project.
3) Planning the Project.
4) Execution the Project.
5) Evaluation of the Project.
Elements of PBL:-
The care idea of Project based learning is that real world
problems capture students interest and provoke. Serious
thinking as the students acquire and apply new knowledge
plays the role of facilitator, working with students to frame
worthwile questions, structuring meaningful tasks, coaching
both knowledge Development and social skills, and carefully
assessing what students have learned from the experience.
Typical Projects presents a problem to solve.
PBL replaces other traditional models of instruction such
as lecture, text book workbook driven activities and inquiry as
the preferred delivery method for key topics in the curriculum.
It is an instructional framework which allows teachers to
facilitate and assess deeper understanding rather than stand
and deliver factual information PBL intentionally develops
students problem solving and creative making as products to
communicate deeper understanding of key concepts and
mastery of 21st century essential learning skills such as critical
thinking.
Educational Application of PBL:-
When it comes to prepare the next generation for the
future, then education be comes the primary concern. Project
based learning focuses on developing critical thinking to solve
the students is a style of active learning. In short we can say
“project based learning integoales knowing and doing” when
students apply what they know to solve authentic problems
with intentions to produce results that matter.

1. Scope of work:-
The first and foremost reason to go project based learning
is that is enables educators, teachers, and students to learn
and adopt structures, around projects rather than having
lecture based learning and reading writing assignments of the
traditional classed room learning students learn to
comprehened the entire scope of the project and put the
execution into a structure under guidance of their teachers or
supervisors.
2. Real world problem simulation:-
Projects based learning focuses on enabling student to face
real world situations simulated in the forms of the projects.
Students learn while doing what they know and develop new
learning around hobbies, passions and carries. They often
develop new hobbies, passions and liking for new carriers.
3. Improve the interpersonal skills of a students:-
It greatly the development projects interpersonal skills of
the students projects given often are more complex than in the
assignments given in the traditional classroom based learning .
Students need to structure their efforts in organizing their
survey required for the projects, analyze the survey results, and
prepare reports to reach markets and collaborates with
sponsors of the project. In the entire approach or different
stages of the project they improve their communication skills to
collaborate with various stake holders.
4. Concept and creativity Development:-
Project based learning develops greater depth of
understanding the concepts than in traditional classroom based
learning and results in improved levels of student’s creativity.
Real world situations given in the project are more capable to
draw students’ attention and capture their interest to provoke
the needed level of thinking to apply new knowledge in a
problem solving context.
5. Determines the Actual knowledge:-
Project based learning determines in depth knowledge and
experience of the students and sometimes of teachers in
comparison to the fixed lengthy of learning experience of
traditional classroom based learning. In PBL students develop
their skills and knowledge with classed based learning shorter
span of mentioned based experience derived from a note
approach.
6. Choice of Selecting Real world problems:-
Another great reason to go for PBL is that projects are
chosen by the students or assigned by the teachers according to
the students’ interest. Students are presented to have choice
based on their interest in selecting a real world problem
presented in the project. Interest based selection of projects
gives student unique ways of solving different problems which
are diverse even in the same class, where as traditional
classroom based learning has question/answer based essays
and exam writing including assignments given to all students of
the class.
7. End-to-end Problem solving Skills:-
In Project based learning students undergo various stages
of problem solving through structure of the project which
include various stages like projects scoping, work planning,
activity performing and tracking, managing uncertainties
presented during problems solving activities of the project
presentation of the project, and closure. Students have
opportunities to develop skills of observations, survey, research,
presentation, communication and collaboration with people
involved, team building and leadership in the end-to-end
problem solving approach of PBL.
Conclusion:-
Giving a project to students is better now a days rather
than making them sit in a class and speaking it all out for
them. This makes the children go out their own and learn on
their own, giving them a better understanding of the topic. This
way, students will learn to takes up an initiative on their own
and know more on their chosen topics. Gaining knowledge
should be fun and interesting, where children should engage
themselves in a world of facts.
