CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Nowadays, people tend to look for ideas to make life easy and comfortable in every way.

They think of new innovations that they believe will be for the better effectivity of life. There are

many factors that people consider in being involved with the modern technology. One of their

considerations is the trend. People in this generation always greed for updates so that they won’t

get left behind on what is new.

Investing in new technology, whether it’s good or bad, is a one way of not getting left

behind in the society (Green, n.d.). People will keep on investing in new technology whether it

will affect them in a good or bad way. This is their way of keeping in touch with the new techie

genre; Internet is one of the new technologies that people grab easily because they see the

potential hidden in it. With the use of internet, they can do many interactive things and seek out

for information.

Getting information in the internet is so easy because it has lots and lots of information

stored in it (Kapor, n.d.). Internet since then has feeding much information to people. They are

able to search up the things they want to see and to read or the sites they want to look up to in the

internet. They have variety of ways of easy access in searching. People want to interact socially,

not only face-to-face, but also they want to talk despite their distances. They used things like

telephones, mobile phones, and many more. They also want to chat through the use of the

internet.

1
University of the East − Manila

This has put up a new type of media called the “Social Media.” Obar (2015) defined social

media as computer-mediated technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information,

ideas, career interests and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks.

Social media involves socializing and associating with people, information, data and mingling

with people who as well, use social media. This is composed of many chatting sites including

Friendster, Facebook, Yahoo Messenger and many more. This media allows people to talk, chat,

or message their friends, relatives, co-workers and many more in real time. They can do it

anytime they want and waiting for their friends’ response doesn’t take much time because they

can also reply in real time. Unlike in air mails, it takes days to receive a letter from your relatives

or friends coming from the other countries. As technology improves, so does social media. As

time goes by, Facebook,Twitter, and other social networking sites are enhancing features for

better internet socialization.

Social media is changing the way we talk and communicate with people and they see us ,

positively or negatively and everytime we post a photo it also contributes to who we are (Martin,

n.d.). Social media lets you post photos with your friends and lets you update your status on

what’s going on with your life. People may like, comment, or even share your post with other

people. Many people find social media fun and enjoying because of its various features that you

can easily learn and use. People spend most of their time using social media. They care about

how people react on their posted status or photos. They spend hours browsing through their

social media accounts. An average person will spend two hours every day on his/her social

2
University of the East − Manila

media account which translates to five years and 4 months in his/her lifetime, beating

eating and drinking within in the same field (Asano, 2017).

Discipline is a must when using social media (Ohanian, n.d.). On the other hand,

addiction is a compulsive behavior that leads to negative effects. It’s the feeling of needing or

desiring to do something now and then. Social media can also be an addiction to some. Addiction

is not only found in cigarettes and other drugs but also in social media which leads to social

media addiction.

Social Media Addiction is a serious case. It influences people around the world, in

whatever age they are. This leads to various unhealthy effects such as the feeling of

disconnection within the real world (includes family and friends), loss of interest in meeting and

spending time with his/her loved ones, loss of sleep, fluctuating weight, and as well as bad

eyesight.

Researchers in Chicago conducted a study and found out that social media addiction can

be stronger than cigarette and booze (Walker, 2017). Social media has been doing great since

then. It has been a good foundation and gateway of communication and dispatching messages to

various people. On the contrary, these two aren’t a good combination. If socializing has gotten to

the point that it’s starting to get addictive, one must stop.

An average person will spend two hours on his/her social media, how many more hours

does a social media addict will spend on his/her social media account? Social Media addiction

can easily obtained anytime. Because of various ways in connecting to the internet, you can

easily access your social media accounts in just seconds.

3
University of the East − Manila

One of the addictive aspects of social networking addiction is “FOMO” or fear of missing

out (Elgan, 2015). They don’t want to get left behind to the latest news or the latest viral video or

photo in social media sites. They consistently post and share news and content and talk to each

other every day because they want to keep in touch. Social media addiction is also a major

problem in our society because people nowadays are exposed in social media. Since it is getting

bigger day by day, it increases the possibility of social media addiction.

The Wall Street Journal debunked reports that 1 in 5 marriages are ruined by Facebook

(Walker, 2017). Social media addiction has gone from bad to worst. Social media addiction has

been affecting time management and worst, affecting relationships of most people.

Adults, Senior citizen, and teens are not exempted in this kind of addiction. Internet is

expanding everyday, so does social media. New applications like Snapchat and Instagram are

evidences that social media is expanding and improving. Social media today can make you an

instant celebrity. People today are finding things that are extraordinary and new. One of its

addictive factors is that it can bring fame when many people liked one’s status or posted media

and it reaches worldwide and many people liking and loving your post, thus, making it viral.

They spend hours on social media thinking on how they can be known worldwide or in other

words, how they can be famous. There are many factors that make social media addicting that

result to social media addiction.

Because of these issues, it led the researchers to conduct a study on “Analysis on Social

Media addiction among Grade 11 students on University of the East – Manila”.

The researchers’ objective in conducting this study is to know whether an individual is

classified as a social media addict. In conducting the study, the researchers’ are not just

4

analyzing but also informing people on how to treat a social media addict person. One of the

researchers’ objectives also is to know the factors that make up a social media addict.

This study will contribute to the parents, teachers, and students in reflecting in their

selves in whether they are addicted to social media or not.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

RELATED LITERATURE

These are the review of related literature, including local and foreign, that will support

our research title.

LOCAL STUDY

Social Media Addiction is evident now in most country especially in our own country. It

also has a similar manifestation than that of Drug – Addiction manifestations (Cabello, 2015).

Majority of the Filipinos use social media because it can be easily accessed even in low-price

phones even a children learning to write now can easily have a facebook account (Cabello,

2015,). Because social media addiction also associates with the behavior of the person. Time is

also a factor to these kind of addiction. Majority of the Filipinos spend more time on their social

networks rather than checking e-mails (Tuazon, 2011).

Social Media Addiction can also be obtained by the speed of the internet. Internet is also

a major factor of social media addiction. They cannot access social media, of course, without the

internet. The speed and the presence affects on how they can access. Our country’s average

speed of fixed-line broadband is 4.2 mbps while on South Korea has the fastest speed of 26.3

mbps (Camus, 2017). Despite of our not-so-fast internet speed, Philippines is at number 1 when

it comes to the usage of social media while south Koreans logged into their accounts an average

of 1 hour and 11 minutes (Camus, 2017

11
University of the East − Manila

Selfies or pictures that are post in social media also associates with this kind of addiction.

Because they want to update their friends and they want the world to see what they are doing or

happening to them. Makati city and Pasig, Philippines has 258 selfie takers for 100,000 people

(Vince, 2014). Some people are attached to social media that it may lead to spending too much

time in it without doing your task that you need to do (Parnala, 2012) Social media can be fun

and enjoying but spending too much time in it can lead to distraction or worst, to addiction.

Social networking sites (SNSs) are virtual communities where people can communicate,

react and meet other people with their shared interests and create individual public profiles. SNS

are mostly used for social purposes (Kuss & Griffiths, 2011). People use social networks in order

for them to interact with their love ones, friends, relatives and other people such as by E-mail, by

instant messaging through Facebook or Messenger, and through face-to-face online forums.

According to Boyd and Ellison (2008), SNSs are standardized way that allows people

to create public or semipublic profiles, state a list of other users, and view and traverse their list

of connections and others made within the bounded system.

There are six core components in relation to social networking. First of all is salience wherein

this happens when social networking becomes an important activity of an individual that

influence his or her thinking, feelings or cravings, and behavior. Second is mood modification

wherein this refers to the subjective experiences where an individual is engage to social

12
University of the East − Manila

networking to indulge their own boredom. Third is tolerance wherein this is the process where

people gradually build up the amount of time spent every day using social networks. Fourth is

withdrawal symptoms wherein this is the unpleasant feeling which occur when an individual in

unable to use social networks. Fifth is conflict wherein this refers to the interpersonal conflicts,

conflicts with social life, hobbies and interests, or from within the individual him- or herself that

are concerned with too much time spent using social networks. The last but not the least is

relapse wherein the tendency that the early patterns of excessive social networking to return.

Griffiths (2005) believes that any behavior that actualize the six core components of

addiction can be operationally defined as addiction. He also pointed out that there is a

fundamental difference between addictions to the Internet and addictions on the Internet. The

excessive use of new technologies especially social networking may be problematic and

addictive to young people. According to the bio-psychosocial framework for the etiology of

addictions (Griffiths, 2005) and the syndrome model of addiction (Shaffer, et al., 2004), there are

symptoms experienced by those people addicted in using SNSs which is similar to those

experienced by individuals addicted to substances or other behaviors.

Turel and Serenko (2012) summarized three overarching theoretical perspectives to

explain the formation of SNS addiction. First is cognitive-behavioral model wherein in this

model emphasizes that the “abnormal” social networking arises from maladaptive cognitions

which is developed by various environmental factors that leads to addictive social networking.

Second is social skill model wherein in this model emphasizes that

13
University of the East − Manila

“abnormal” social networking arises because people lack self-presentational skills which

prefers in using face-to-face interaction that leads to addictive social networking.

RELATED STUDIES

These are the review of related study, including local and foreign, that will support our

research title.

LOCAL STUDY

As shown in the study of the students of Lyceum (2008), due to the increase of

professors questioning whether grades of the students are being affected by how much time is

being spent on social media. Other factors may affect the way of a student views studying or

learning. Teachers are likewise affected because of these negative implications. We all have our

own reason why we love to use social media. Some of us like to browse other people’s photo,

while others use social media as a way to vent their emotions. But according to this study

students are paying more attention towards these social media activities rather than their time to

study which will surely affect their grades. The researchers argue that it is important for teachers

to study the effects of social media addiction in student’s academic performance. The result of

this study would lead to use social media as an excellent tool in enhancing academic

performance not a hindrance in academic learning.

14
University of the East − Manila

Study shows that a large number of Filipinos are social media users. Filipinos spend more time

using an internet than other countries and their have a billion unique mobile that Filipino use to

communicate to other people using social media and according to the survey there are many

Filipinos spend 3.7hours per day accessing social media account

According to Tapnio and Rood (2011) president Fidel Ramos in (1992-1998) and followed

by president Estrada the telecoms industry was liberalized and growth was in mobile phone

because of technology the social media skyrocketed so we have a faceboook being use by more

than 25% of the population and ranking 8th in the world while social media rapidly growing in

the popularity. Since 2011 the impact of social media is The civil society organizations we

trained knew that social media is most effective when it supplements the traditional mode of

campaigning to encourage collective action against human rights abuses. As mobile phones

reach even the most remote citizens, and internet penetration – and along with it social media

usage – widens its reach in the Philippines, these tools will become potentially more valuable to

civil society, citizens, and officials in their advocacy efforts , careful attention needs to be paid to

how much impact is generated on the daunting development challenges facing the country.

Based on the research of Tamayo and Dela Cruz (2014) Gadgets are children’s

companion. So they have the easiest access in social media and there are many parents that

disapprove that social media has a lot of negative effects in their academics. But some parents

believe that exposing their children into social media will make them more alert, smart and excel

in school.

15
University of the East − Manila

FOREIGN STUDY

The study of Cabral and Jaclyn (2011) aimed to assess if Generation Y is addicted to

social networking sites, specifically, whether in facebook, myspace, twitter, and linkedin.

Researchers also found answers to how social media addiction can affect one in different cases.

Based on their findings, facebook was often used by the generation Y, followed by twitter ,

linkedin ,and myspace. Plus, According to the sample, Most of their participants have been

spending over an hour in social networking. It became a hindrance to their productivity, in terms

of academic performances or in other works. Results also revealed that participants are afraid of

being left out or not being able to catch up which makes it hard for them to limit their use of

social media.

According to Bennett (2014), there are more than two billion active to social media users

worldwide. Social networking usage is at already 28% and users age between 15 and 19 spend at

least 3 hours per day. Based on this study, a large part of Social Media users are teens aging 15 –

19 years old. A large number of our society.

The youth today are more engaged in social media; Social Media sites became an incentive to

interact more with their friends or other people with same interests. (Clarke-Pearson, O'Keeffe,

2011). Based on the finding of this research, the social media became beneficial to the youth

because of its impact on their social and communication skills; the more they use social media,

the more they enhance their skills in socializing and communicating with other people.

Researchers also determined the risks of using social media, like Cyber bullying or online

harassment, sexting, and facebook depression. Teens may get affected by peer pressure that can

16
University of the East − Manila

lead to cyber bullying. This risk would influence the youth's attitude and personality in any way

possible; through social media, they would find acceptance; the chance of suffering inconsolable

situations is always present; some could feel isolated or being left out.

Social media already highly influence our behavior or personality; not only in behavior but

also in relationship and education (Kasteler, 2010). Social media is forms of public

communication that he/she can browse many people that he/she meeting new people that their

know their personality.

17
University of the East − Manila

Synthesis of The Study

The studies or reviews mostly focus on the impacts of social media to the students.

These impacts affected these people’s behavior and their performance, especially in academics.

Some of the study also shows statistics on much Filipinos are fond of using social media. The

researchers from the study included the results on how much time they spend on social media.

Proponents believe that social media has been more of a hindrance than being beneficial
to

people. Based on the related researches, Social Media made easy access to many when it comes

to browsing and communication. Given that social media is a way for interaction with

friends, family, and etc, Most people use them nowadays than anything else. Researchers also

found that social media has been the source of entertainment of the techie genre; Here, they

satisfy their boredom by browsing & sharing anything they desire about their daily lives.

Too much usage of social media can impact one’s behavior and performances. This has led the

researchers to prove that insufficient control of social media can result to social media

addiction.

Based on the different studies and data we gathered, I therefore conclude that social media

addiction has the similar manifestation as the drug addiction. It is easily acquired specially if

there is a good internet connection. It affects the life of the students, the time they spend in their

priorities and their personal connection with their families and friends. The samples also give

evidence that social media has taken over the peoples' time and attention dues to it's addictive

features like sharing posts, interaction, and other entertainment features.

18
University of the East − Manila

Since we do have a lot of ways accessing social media, the most common addiction is
posting

pictures and things you do have in mind and it’s a public communication that the people can

meet new people. however social media addiction affects normal student’s time because they

tend to spend a lot of it using social media applications rather than preparing for their

responsibilities and it spend more than 2 to 3 hours . Social media addicts also tend to perform

less in school, it’s because instead they try to review notes, they are asking answers. This also

affects individual personal behavior.

When they see good quotes form the social media, they get

inspired with their life and accept the changes that will happen. In addition to this, researchers

conclude that social media had also affected the character and behavior of it's users. Based on

what people see in their newsfeeds in social media, it influenced their point of view in life

. Some took it as a confidence booster while others faced conflicts like degrading themselves.

I think social media definitely affects one’s life in different aspects, ways and views

. Sometimes, the social media addiction changes one’s life for good, some it doesn’t

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researchers applied the qualitative method to treat the data that was gathered in this

course of the study. The researchers also used descriptive method because they handed out

questionnaires to know who were qualified for the in-depth interview of the researchers.

PARTICIPANTS OF THE STUDY

The participants of the study will come from the University of the East – Manila. The

participants of the study are grade 11 students only. The participants of the study will also be

picked from the survey sheets that the researchers give to them. The researchers will only pick 8

participants from the population.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The technique applied in selecting the subjects for our interview was under probability

sampling. According to William M.K. (2006) Probability Sampling is a method that utilize some

form of rambom selecting. Specifically we use Stratified Random Sampling as we all know this

is a technique not just to know the specific subgroups of the participants, but also to ensure the

certainty of the subjects that the reseachers need. As according to Andale (2017) Stratified

Random Sampling is time comsuming and tendious specifically when creating large samples

from split subjects.

20
University of the East − Manila

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The instrument that will be used by the researchers in this study is the questionnaires that

will be handed out to the students of University of the East Manila. The questionnaires will be

given to the students, will be formulated based on the researcher’s readings, discoveries,

curiosity, and as well as knowledge about the topic that they all have. The preparation of the

instrument will be thoroughly discussed by the researchers and must consider great designs and

good data collection. Open-ended questions will be provided to accommodate to free formatted

views and opinions related to the topic. In this way, the survey will be authorized to achieve

valid responses of the students. Through this research instrument, personal biases will be

avoided; less pressure for immediate response and the anonymity or privacy of the students will

be protected; and greater cost will be reduced. The instrument is also expected to be validated by

few consultants and the adult sponsor such as the research adviser.

21
University of the East − Manila

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers will give a Social Media Addiction Test (SMAT) to the Grade 11 students

in able to determine who are qualified and suited enough to be a participant in the research. And

to know if the qualified participants accept to be a part of the presented research, they were asked

first if they are willing to be a participant and will be given an informed consent consisting their

rights. Also, there will be appropriate consequences to the researchers if the provided

information from the participants were not kept confidential. The researchers applied an in-depth

interview in their phenomenological study. The selected participants will be interviewed

personally and individually. The length of interview depends on how they answer our questions.

In order to gather more information and clarify things, the researchers prepared open-ended

questions for the participants. The gathered data from the participants was validated by the

researchers and the professionals to make sure if the information stated are appropriate in the

presented research.

DATA VALIDATION PROCEDURE

The data will be validated by the researchers’ research adviser and professionals who

have expertise in this certain kind of research, by the group who are tackling this study, and by

the participants themselves to know whether the findings that have been gathered by the

researchers are what they expected or what they need to see.

22
University of the East − Manila

DATA ANALYSIS

The researchers’ will analyze by interpreting the gathered data so that they can get

reliable findings regarding the questions in the problem statement. Researchers will

summarize the data to create a statement that will generalize the outcome. The

researchers will also use the interpretative phenomenological analysis or the IPA.

23
University of the East − Manila

CHAPTER IV
PRESENTATION, INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA

This chapter primarily covers discussion of the results gathered from the interviews,

and their analysis and interpretation. This also tends to find an answer regarding the

problem statement of this research.

Based on the researchers’ analysis and interpretation on the data gathered, they have

come up with 7 categories: Satisfaction, Distraction, Addiction, Influence,

Incompleteness, Convenience, and Socialize. The 8 participants that we based our theme

with came from the ABM strand of University of the East – Manila and are exposed to

social media. Among the population, they are the ones chosen because they provide a

deeper analysis regarding social media addiction.

What do social media really is? Well a lot may say social media is where they find their

happiness, inner peace and freedom. But as they go on with the excessive usage of social

media they have underestimate the bad feature of a social media. Which is addiction,

addiction may be in a good and bad way. But let's be more realistic and intact with our

topic so let's discuss the bad way. Addiction may lead to mood swings or sudden drift of

one's mood. It also affects the way of thinking of an individual. In this state of being, one

can't properly distinguish what could be beneficial to him and which is not.

As part of the findings, this kind of addiction is present among students especially when

they find satisfaction or when they are bored or have nothing to do for the day. They also

said in the in-depth interview that they feel incomplete or they feel outdated when they

24
University of the East − Manila

don’t go online. This kind of feeling that something is lost when one thing is not done or

the itch to always go online even when nothing is interesting or new is one of the signs of

having this kind of addiction.

Because the survey sheets are not accurate enough to provide substantial

information, the qualitative research method is done with phenomenological analysis.

The qualitative approach provided more relevant and reliable information that the

researchers will need to come up with a theme and to interpret the data that the

researchers’ gathered during the in-depth interview.

Social media impacts their character and behavior in many ways. Most of

them answered that it made them more sociable; Shy no more. In addition to this, since

social media is all about being able to interact with other people, participants improved

their communication skills. Though there are pros, there would also be cons. Due to the

attention being taken by social media from the students, Many of them think that social

media is taking over their priorities. Most responses prove that it is hard for the students

to control and manage their time between social media and their important task like in

academics.

Though there are pros, there would also be cons. Due to the attention being

taken by social media from the students, Many of them think that social media is taking

over their priorities. Most responses prove that it is hard for the students to control and

manage their time between social media and their important task like in academics. Time

management is not present in this kind of addiction. Their mindset that they will only use

their social media accounts for just only 30 minutes or less is not being followed because

25
University of the East − Manila

they are being satisfied of what they see and also it keeps them updated and on track of

what is happening in the world.

The researchers also observed in the in-depth interview that the features of social

media are also a factor. The features of social media, which is presented in the review of

related literature, to chat with your family and friends in just a touch of a button makes

people, especially the young, to spend so much time on this. The researchers also

observed that the average spending of the participants is 2-3 hours. To spend this long on

social media, especially if this is habitual, is not just a hobby anymore.

This section will show the results of the interview and their statement regarding

the researchers’ question during the in-depth interview. This interview will also show

how social media affects them, not only academically, but how it also affects with their

other things they need to do first.

Relevance to review of related literature and studies

Our simulacrum focuses to the flow on how our interview work together with it's

interpretation. We have gathered several themes that fits in , in our study together in our studied

lit. We have learned that too much exposure of a person or a student with computer may lead to

excessive usage of computer which can easily be an instrument for a person to access

unlimitedly their social media accounts which they have said that it was their best outlets to

relive stress. Because for them being unable to use their accounts leads to Incompleteness which

is anchored with distraction since the student is more on focused on their social activity they tend

to do things that is based on satisfaction. Which has been their reason why they engaged

themselves into this situation. Some told that being not into date with those stuff you'll be left

out, you'll be vulnerable and on the end you won't be trendy enough to be in the group. Some do

also said that all of this thing is just for entertainment but do they put in mind that being going

with flow of this phenomena causes too much activity absorption that they will contain. By then

they didn't notice that slowly they climbing up into the process where in they become intred

which will turn into relationship development with other people you met through social media.

And with the use of connection which is also one of the main instruments of social media

addiction it serves convince to each and everyone who seeks for socialization that will lastly lead

to sharing.

Social media are the websites and applications that enables a person or user to

create and share. It is the way to participate in social networking where people can make friends

and socialize with others. The six core components in relation to social media given in the

chapter 2 and what Griffths (2005) believes that any behavior that actualize the six core

47
University of the East − Manila

components of addiction can be operationally defined as addiction. Thus, these components

explain how a person is addicted with social media. The results of our findings are best to

support these literature. One of the common reason why people use social media is for

entertainment. They find social media entertaining because it modifies mood especially when

someone is bored or tired and needs to relax. Facebook, twitter and instagram are some of the

most used websites. People usually go online just for updates and see what's on trend. Social

media is beneficial to the students because it ables them to do their schoolworks faster and

easier. But sometimes, students are overusing it and being dependent with what they get from the

social media. As stated in the chapter 2 from Parnala (2012), some people are attached to social

media that it may lead to spending too much time in it without doing task that are needed to be

done. In other words, if students got addicted in using social media, they might prioritize social

media rather than schoolworks or feels incomplete in a day without using social media. In this

scenario, it can be a distraction for the students in their school performances. It is accurate that

social media highly influence our behavior or personality, relationship with others and education.

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter covers the summary of findings, conclusions, and recommendations. This are based

on the data gathered and based on the findings on the chapter 4.

Summary of findings

There is no doubt that social media is indeed a helpful tool in the modern times. It impact

the students, good or bad, that led them to social media addiction.

Based on the researchers’ findings, Social media has been an instrument for a faster way

for communication and interaction; which goes with one of the researchers’ theme: (1)

INTERACTION. According to REACHOUT.COM, Personal skills are very important in this

context: to make, develop and keep friendships, and to be regarded as a trusted connection within

a network. Social networking services can provide young people with opportunities to learn how

to function successfully in a community, navigating a public social space and developing social

norms and skills as participants in peer groups. Social Media gives free and easy access for

communication and (2) INTERACTION with family, friends, and even people they don’t know.

All mentioned could also result to (3) SOCIALIZATION and (4) RELATIONSHIP

DEVELOPMENT; since through those processes, they are developing sociability and

relationship with others. In addition to this, Social media also helped building (5)

CONNECTIONS with other users; it maintains each one connected with one another through

messages, posts, and etc. Samples also shows that Social media is a boredom-killer. It gives (6)

ENTERTAINMENT to its users through (7) SHARING of different stuffs like pictures and

videos randomly about any topic, which anyone can see.

49
University of the East − Manila

Cons are never avoided. The techie generation used too much of social media nowadays.

According to Elgan(2015), The addictive aspect of social networking is associated with FOMO

— fear of missing out. Everyone is on Facebook or any social media app. They're posting things,

sharing news and content and talking to each other 24/7. Looking at the responses of the

interviewees, They always want to be updated (8) KNOWING what's up, to be (9) TREND;

afraid to be left out. Given that they don’t desire to be outdated, one would always check their

social media accounts for the latest news or notifications due to the feeling of being (10)

INCOMPLETE without the checking. Through these, They become (11) VULNERABLE &

(12) DISTRACTED, despite of the (13) SATISFACTION and the risks of using social media.

"The addictive part of the social media is very bad and can disturb personal lives as well. The

teenagers are the most affected by the addiction of the social media. They get involved very

extensively and are eventually cut off from the society. It can also waste individual time that

could have been utilized by productive tasks and activities ",said by Ahmad(2016)There’s no

denying that social media took over the time and attention of the users, like the students, that it

conflicts with their academic performances, relationship with others, and even the development

of their personality.

Recommendations

For parents

1. To guide their children in the proper use of social media

2. To limit their children in too much exposure of social media

3. Be able to understand their children situation

For the school officials

1. Establish more activities that could engage students to be more active physically than being

hang up in social media.

2. Conduct seminars that can open the minds up of the students in what type of addiction they

can be involve to.

For the future researchers

1. Serves as a basis of your future research or output.

2. This could have been more accurate if we could just only have longer span of time to gather

informations and data that we could use in the study.

3. Trustworthiness of data will be more established in future researchers.

For the students

1. They should be aware on how much time they spend in using social media.

2. They should reflect on themselves on how social media affects them.

3. Social media should not be their priority.

4. They should not be dependent in social media.
