Code: M7Al-Iic-3: Lesson Plan in Mathematics 7 September 17, 2019 8:40am - 9:40am I-Learning Objectives

This lesson plan summarizes teaching students about constants and variables in algebraic expressions. The objectives are for students to differentiate between constants and variables, identify them in expressions, and solve expressions given variable values. Students will be divided into groups to identify constants and variables in activities. They will then analyze the activity, discuss the topic of constants and variables, and work through examples of expressions, their terms, constants, variables, and solutions. As assessment, students will identify these components in other expressions and solve them.

Lesson Plan in Mathematics 7

September 17, 2019

8:40AM – 9:40AM

I-Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
 Differentiate constant and variable,
 Identify constant and variable in a given algebraic expression, and
 Solve algebraic expression given the value of variable.
CODE: M7AL-IIc-3
II- Subject Matter
Topic: Constant and Variable in Algebraic Expression
Reference: Grade 7 Mathematics Book. https://www.wikihow.com/Solve-an-Algebraic-
Expression
Materials: Chalkboard, Chalk, visual aid.
III- Learning Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
o Prayer, greetings, classroom management, attendance
B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
The Class will be divided into 4 groups. Each group will be given an activity material.
They are going to guess if the following is constant or variable. The activity will last
for only 10 minutes.
2. Analysis
a. How do you find the activity?
b. What mathematical concept did you use in determining if it is constant or
variable?
c. What do you think is our topic today?
3. Abstraction
An algebraic expression is a mathematical phrase that contains numbers and/or
variables. Though it cannot be solved because it does not contain an equals sign (=), it
can be simplified. You can, however, solve algebraic equations, which contain algebraic
expressions separated by an equals sign.

Expression Algebraic equation

4x + 2 4x + 2 = 18
Constant : A symbol having a fixed numerical value is called a constant.
OR
The number before an alphabet (variable) is called a constant. In mathematics, often the
value of a certain number may be unknown. A variable is a symbol, usually a letter,
which is used to represent an unknown number.

Some examples of variables are: x, a, b, c,

A term can be a number, a variable, or a number and variable combined by multiplication

or division.

Some examples of terms are: x, 8, 4y

Expression – it is a combination of a number and a variable.

4. Application: x = 2, and y = 1

1. 2x – y 2. 11xy
Term = 2 1
Constant = 2 11
Variable = x and y x and y
2 ( 2) – 1 = 3 11(2)(1) = 23
5. Evaluation: ½ crosswise
Write the term, constant, and variable of the following expression and solve
using all variables is equal to 2.

EXPRESSION TERM CONSTANT VARIABLE ANSWER

1. 8x – 4y 2 8 and 4 x and y 8
2. 9mn 1 9 m and n 36
3. 12ab 1 12 a and b 44
4. 5m + y 2 5 and 1 m and y 12
5. a 1 1 a 2

6. Assignment: ½ crosswise
Give two examples of algebraic equation and draw a table. Write down the term,
constant and variables.
