Usage of Phones
Phones are one of mankind’s invention that has helped people for the better. It
helped us access things we couldn’t back in the past. You can do many things with it. It’s
very portable and useful. The world today has 2.71 billion users of smartphones, that
makes up to 35.13% of the world’s population (Statistica). There are now more than 5.13
billion individuals globally with mobile devices, which makes up to 66.53% of the world’s
population (real-time intelligence information from GSMA) and more than 8.97 trillion
mobile connections are now available worldwide, surpassing the current world population
of 7.71 trillion estimated by UN digital analysts. But phones have also helped people for
the worse.
Cheating in schools are made more easy and efficient because of phones. With
just a tap, students can easily access information needed to pass. Because of its high
level of portability and easy access to the web (Crystal Ayres), students can get
information whenever they are. “Cell Phones are a distraction in schools. They are a
distraction, because kids are playing games when they are supposed to be working on
their assignments. And the fact that they could go off in class” (David and Logan). Many
students here in the Philippines are most likely distracted due to their phones but not all
of them. I have seen fellow students that are using phones to help them get the necessary
help in their works. Not everyone uses Cell phones for doing wrong things. I think that the
usage of Phones depends on the person themselves. I do not believe in banning
cellphone in schools, in fact, I want schools to practice using phones as a medium for
teaching. Many people may not agree with phones being used as a tool for learning but
we are moving towards an age where technology is very important. I am not saying that
traditional ways of teaching should be forgotten but should rather be used with the new
way.
Using phones can also cause death. With an estimation of 1.4 million crashes from
drivers talking on Phones and about 200,000 crashes from texts or e-mails sent by the
driver (WHO). Using Phones whilst driving can cause all of the three driving distractions;
Visual, Physical and Cognitive distraction (NSC). Many people are doing the “Hands-
Free” mobile use, attaching phone holders inside of cars for GPS, using Bluetooth
earphones for calling and more. It may seem to be able to lessen accidents but no, it’s
still a risk because with the use of GPS and Bluetooth earphones, it already serves as a
visual and cognitive distraction. “Interestingly, some limited evidence suggests that
drivers using hands-free phones are less likely to show such compensatory behavior
compared to those who drive and use hand-held phones. This may be because the
physical presence of a hand-held phone acts as a reminder to the driver of the potential
safety threat posed by the use of the phone.” (WHO). People should understand that
using cell phones, whether you do the “Hands-free” way of using cell phones while driving,
its still wrong, it might be convenient for people who are very busy but it has so many
risks. It doesn’t change the fact that anything you do or say, using your phones while
driving can and will cause accidents.
In conclusion, though phones have a lot of negative causes, it all depends on the
person using it. Whether they want to use it for bad or for good. But every choice has a
consequence that follows. They should also limit the usage of phones, because your life
doesn’t revolve around your phones. If you are addicted to phones, get some help.
Phones has also a lot of good characteristics and are really helpful but can be
manipulated into a tool for doing horrible acts. People should always use phones for the
sake of good deeds and important things like studying, spreading positive awareness,
talking to friends, not by cheating, spreading hate and talking to people who you know
are bad, especially strangers. Even though not all strangers are bad. Phones should be
a tool for efficiency for good deeds, not by bad deeds.
