Daraga, Albay

Daraga is now the official first class municipality in the province of Albay,

Philippines. According to the 2015 census, it has a population of 126,595 people.

According to the Philippine Statistics Authority, the municipality has a land area of

118.64 square kilometers (45.81 sq mi). This municipal land area is distributed among

the present 16 urban barangays and 42 rural barangays.

Daraga is located in Albay, Bicol and clearly everywhere we could experience

environmental dilemmas. Albay has been experiencing problems with disposing

garbage in a good and healthy way. Also, Albay has been facing problems with

pollution since plastic are common everywhere, air pollution through smoking cigarettes

and smoke from vehicles and machines and deforestation. Albay banned smoking,

using plastics and cutting trees specifically coconut trees. Also, authorities have been

proposing programs regarding sanitary landfill in Draga.

There are many things that Daraga should be aware of and touch other aspects

in environment. Daraga must:

1. Ensure the system of the sanitary landfill because the program will continuously

prevail with effective system.

2. Propose and implement “Green Purchasing” Program. It is a program that

focuses on purchasing alternatives or products that will less likely harm the

environment or totally no harm in the environment such as bio-based products,

energy- efficient products, recycled products and etc.

3. Educate people on the importance of taking care of environment. Give seminars

and talks regarding environment.

4. Stabilize the program of banning the use pf plastics, smoking and cutting trees.

5. Propose and implement “Hazardous Waste Management” Program. This must be

applied in order to segregate wastes. Also to know the wastes we could use

again in a better way.

6. Implementation of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill, a municipal solid waste landfill

(MSWLF) is a discrete area of land or excavation that receives household waste.

A MSWLF may also receive other types of nonhazardous wastes, such as

commercial solid waste, nonhazardous sludge, conditionally exempt small

quantity generator waste, and industrial nonhazardous solid waste.

7. A Recycle-Oriented Society for Environmental Protection of the Japan

Environment Agency (JEA), published a report that formed the basis for Japan's

1991 recycling law

8. Earth Revival Program, called for a new value concept intended to change

people's lifestyles—a paradigm shift in innovative industrial technology and

coordination of industrial activities and environmental policies.

9. A GLOBAL RECYCLE SOCIETY creating a 'recycle society' … in which virtually

all materials used are reused indefinitely and virgin resources become primarily

the 'make-up' materials.
