Date of Meeting; June 14, 2017
Lesson Title; Seeking interpersonal Harmony
Topic; simple classroom orientation and other entry activities.
Objectives; At the end of the discussion, students are able to:
 Identify the rules and regulations, practices and activities in the classroom;
 Have a physical, social and emotional cognizance in dealing different classroom
practices; and
 Create and negotiate with the different classroom policies and regulations.

Date of Meetings: June 15-23 2017, 7 days

Lesson Title: BASICS TO BRILLIANCE
Topic: Module 1: The Nature and Importance of Research
Objectives: At the end of this module, the students can:
 Share research experiences and knowledge;
 Explain the importance of research in daily life; and
 Describe the characteristics, processes, and ethics of research.

Day 1-5. Objectives:

 Share research experiences and knowledge
 Explain the importance of research in daily life

I. Introduction
A. Activating Prior Knowledge
 Individual Activity. Idea Generation Technique
1. To activate students’ prior knowledge, generate student’s ideas from the given topic,
the teacher will present different applications of science.
2.

B. Contextualizing Learning
E.Q. Why is research important?

II. Interaction
A. Development of Knowledge
The teacher presents the three definitions of research from different sources:
1. Research is a careful study that is done to find and report new knowledge about
something. (Merriam—Webster Online Dictionary)
2. Research is systematic inquiry that is designed to collect, analyze, and interpret
data to understand, describe, or predict phenomenon. (Mertens, 2015)
3. Research is the formal and disciplined application of scientific inquiry to the
study of problems. (Navarro and Santos, 2011)

Valuing: The above definitions imply that research is very important in everyday life.
Among its practical applications are discovering medical breakthroughs, advancing
Page 2|6
technological developments, and understanding and solving problems in education,
business, economy, and society.

Some Importance of Research

1. Gather Relevant Information
2. Improve Quality of Life
3. Understand History
4. Personal and Professional Development

III. Integration
A. Synthesis
 Research is the systematic application of the scientific inquiry in order to find solutions to
problems and contribute to knowledge.

B. What Have I Learned So Far?

 Students will answer the following questions:
1. Why is there a need to conduct research?
2. What practical benefits can you get from research?
3. If you are an athlete or an artist, do you still need to conduct research? Why or why
not?

C. Apply It in Real Life

Your community is currently facing an environmental problem on waste disposal.
As a survey specialist, your task is to gather data by conducting interviews and
observation. You may interview any official (barangay captain or councilor), the
waste management officer, and some residents of the community. Make sure you
have a list of questions and observation form before the actual conduct of the data
gathering. Your narrative report should be well written with emphasis on the
possible solutions to solve the waste disposal problem in the community.

Day 6-9. Objective

 Describe the characteristics and processes of research

I.Introduction
A. Activating Prior Knowledge
 The teacher conducts a review of past lessons by showing the practical and personal
benefits of doing research.

In doing research, one is helped to become a:

1. Good Decision Maker
2. Good Problem Solver
3. Good Critical and Creative Thinker
4. Good Contributor of Knowledge

B.Contextualizing Learning
E.Q. What are the characteristics and processes in qualitative research?

 Research shapes a person’s skills in decision making, problem solving, and in knowledge
creation.
 Research has to be empirical, analytical, systematic, cyclical, and original.
 Research follows a step-by-step process to successfully conduct a research study.

B. What Have I Learned So Far?

 Students will answer the following questions:
1. What makes a good research?
2. What is the research process?
3. What are the steps in the process?

C. Assignment: Go Online
Research process is an important facet of the entire research. To be more familiar
with the process, you may perform the worksheet found in the following link:

Day 10-12. Objective

 Describe the ethics in research

I.Introduction
A. Activating Prior Knowledge
 Concept Mapping. Students associate key words related to ethics.

ETHICS

B.Contextualizing Learning
E.Q. What are the ethics in qualitative research?

II. Interaction
A. Development of Knowledge
Ethics, in simple words, are norms for conduct that distinguish between acceptable and
unacceptable behavior. As an important human activity, research has also its own set of
ethics. Research ethics establishes the moral integrity of the researchers which is crucial
as it ensures that the research findings are valid and trustworthy.

Some ethical principles that researchers must observed (Note: Adapted from Shamoo, A. and D.
Resnik, Responsible Conduct of Research, 2nd ed. New York: Oxford University Press, 2009)

Honesty Objectivity Integrity Carefulness

Respect for Social

Openness Confidentiality Responsibility
Intellectual Property

B. Exploration
Beyond the walls. Read and Answer

Read the following selection and answer the guide questions below.

A group of young researchers wanted to determine the possible effects of phthalates on the
metabolic rate and behavior of mice. An experimental procedure was conducted to carry out the problem.
The researchers used old plastic materials from plastic bottles as the sources phthalates. They cut plastic
material into smaller pieces and blended. They injected the phthalate samples orally into the mice. After
the treatment, the metabolic rate and the behavior of the mice were observed.

Guide Questions:
1. What ethical issues should be observed in the research?
2. Do you think the researchers committed any violations in the conduct of research? Why or why not?
3. If you were part of the research team, what should you do to correct the violations?

III. Integration
A. Synthesis
Ethics in research helps establish the moral integrity of the researcher.

B. What Have I Learned So Far?

1. What is ethics in research?
2. Why is it necessary for a researcher to consider ethics in conducting research?
3. Which among the ethical principles should be considered when conducting qualitative research?
