Subject: Power Conversion Techniques Semester I
Assignment II Oct.2019

1. For a half-wave (single SCR) controlled rectifier has the supply voltage of Vs=78sin377t,
load inductance of L=10mH, and resistance of R=5ohms. Find the firing angle for getting
an average output voltage of 16V and also compute the extinction angle. Is the conduction
continuous or discontinuous?
2. For the circuit of a 1-phase half wave controlled rectifier with an inductive load (XL=10Ω),
the firing angle is 60⁰, the input voltage is 240V (rms), 50Hz. Sketch the waveforms of load
voltage, load current. Comment on the average load voltage, real power, reactive power,
input voltamperes and input power factor in the steady state.
3. A battery with a nominal voltage of 110V and internal impedance of 0.5Ω needs to be
charged using a 2-pulse FCC. The battery current may be assumed ripple-free due to a large
inductance in the circuit. If the battery is to be charged at a constant current of 20A, compute
the firing angle required if the converter is connected to a 1-phase supply of 230V. Find
the displacement factor, the distortion factor, the real power input P1, fundamental reactive
power Q1 and the input power factor.
4. A 2-pulse FCC feeds an RL load with R=5.5 Ω and a large inductance so that the load
current is virtually constant. The supply voltage is 230V (rms). For a firing angle of 75°,
find i) average load current ii) rms input current (total) iii) supply power factor and iv)
average and rms currents of any SCR.
5. For a 2-pulse FCC with R-L load, derive the expression for output current under
discontinuous conduction mode and also the boundary condition for CCM and DCM. ALo
the expression for the average output voltage.
6. A 3-phase FCC feeds a resistive load of 50Ω. For a firing angle of 90°, draw neat
waveforms illustrating the supply voltage(s) and the instantaneous load voltage and load
current. Also draw the phase-A current.
7. Draw the waveforms of input voltage, load voltage, load current, and input current in A-
phase for the 3-phase semi-converter with resistive load and α=90⁰. Indicate the conducting
devices.
8. A DC load requires control of average voltage from maximum to 1/4 of the maximum
value. If a half controlled three-phase bridge is to be used, determine the current rating of
the freewheeling diode (Df connected across the load) if the maximum load current is 20 A
which is smooth and ripple free. What will be the rating of a diode connected in one of the
arms of the bridge?
9. A three-phase fully controlled bridge supplies a smooth DC load current of 100A. The
converter is supplied from a 380 V, 50 Hz supply. For an average output voltage of 400 V.
(i) Calculate the required RMS and average current ratings of the thyristors. (ii) Calculate
the rms values of the total supply AC current and the fundamental supply current., calculate
(iii) the input VA to the converter. (iv) the required firing angle. (v) If the input AC voltage
varies by 8%, calculate the range of variation of the firing angle so that the average output
voltage is kept constant.
10. A 1-phase fully controlled converter is supplied from a 230V, 50 Hz source and the firing
angle is /4 rad. The load (R-L type) current is maintained constant at 10A and the average
load voltage is 180V. Find the i) source inductance ii) load resistance and iii) overlap angle
.
