Grammar Portfolio 2.

1) Indefinite article a / an.:


Use a before consonant sound.
Use an before vowel sound.
The indefinite article a / an is only used in singular.
Write some examples:
 There is a frog in the garden.
 I would like a cake.
 My mom is a nurse at the hospital.

2) Spelling rules for Plural forms:

1. Add -s to a word in singular to form the corresponding plural.

Examples:

 Orange- oranges.
 Pen- pens.

2. Add -es to words ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, and -o


Examples:

 Dress- Dresses.
 Fox- Foxes.
 Bench- Benches.
 Dish- Dishes.

3. Words ending in -y preceded by a consonant, change -y to -i and add -


es.
Examples:

 Cherry- Cherries.
 Puppy- Puppies.

4. Some words have irregular plural forms.

For example, man - men; woman - women


Other examples:

 Wife- Wives.
 Knife- Knives.
 Loaf- Loaves.
3) Demonstratives in English:

 This car is beautiful.


 These books are too expensive.
 That is a desk.
 Those women work here.

4) Possessive Nouns: Add 'S to the name of the person who possesses
something.

Examples:
 These are men's shoes.
 Children's clothes are very expensive.

5) Prepositions of location:

In on under next to between.

This words indicate different locations of objects and people in space. Examples
(If possible insert an image to illustrate each one):

 There is a lamp on
the table.
 There is a pencil on
the table.
 There is a notebook
between the pencil
and the lamp.
 There is a carpet in
front of the bed.
 There is a doll in
front of the plant.
 There are books in
the shelf.

5. Position of adjectives:

In English the words that describe somebody or something (adjectives) are


placed before the people or objects described (noun). Examples (If possible
insert an image to illustrate each one):

 She is a nice girl.


 That was a clever idea.
 A large, round table.
 Red and blue socks.
