2780930-340 340 1968–73 LA Starting in 1968, all engine and major driveline components are stamped with the

Most warranty engines will not have this stamping (although the technicians were

RB Big Blocks Engine Serial Number
Casting No. CID Year Family Remarks The serial number is a sequence of 14 digits that contains a wealth of information

1852029 413 1962 RB Max Wedge and what it means. Occasionally, for whatever reason, an engine will not have a serial
2120529 413 1959–65 RB number stamped on it. This seems to be fairly common, so if yours doesn’t, it’s not
2205697 413 1959–65 RB Pass Car that big of a deal. On slant-6 engines the number is stamped on the block, below the
2468030 413 RB head near the ignition coil. Small blocks seem to have their own story—a sequence
1851629 413 1961 RB of numbers will almost always be present, but they don’t always follow this particular
1852029 413 1962 RB Med. Duty Truck serial number pattern. For small blocks, look on the front face of the block, below
MAX PERF the driver’s side cylinder head (see the small-block ID Boss explanation for more
1852029 413 1962–63 RB Med. Duty Truck information). For B and RB big blocks, the number is typically found along the oil pan
2120529 413 1959–65 RB rail, close to or under the starter. These are hand-stamped numbers, so visibility and
consistency are not always the greatest.

the stampings on the ID boss. This machined pad includes the displacement, build date, HP, HP2, High Performance

B/RB Big Block and Hemi ID Boss
Big Block: Locating the ID pad on big blocks is the easiest way to distinguish a “B”
engine from an “RB” engine. On “B” engines, the ID pad is located on the passenger’s
side of the engine, just below the cylinder head next to the distributor base; on “RB”
or Hemi engines, the ID pad is located on top of the block directly in front of the intake
manifold valley pan, next to the distributor base toward the driver’s side.
The first letter is the year code, followed by the engine’s displacement. Hemi
engines have an “H” after the year letter and before the displacement, while Cylinder Heads
truck blocks have a “T” in this location. Engine displacements before 1965 Head casting numbers can be found in two places on both big- and small-block
may have a digit missing. For example: 36=361, 38=383, 41=413. engines. The first is under the valve cover, where you’ll find a complete number as
well as other casting information like the date and clock. These numbers may be
covered in hardened, burned oil (a.k.a. “coke”), which may make them hard to read.
The head must be off the engine to find the second position, which is located on the

Intake Manifold
Finding the intake manifold casting number is fairly simple. Usually, the casting
number is on top of the manifold, close to the carburetor mounting pad. Occasionally
it’s on the bottom of the manifold, which can pose an identification problem if it’s still
installed on the engine.
