Procedure Setup and Calibrate ECT DefHi
2. Setup
a. First Click on File→ New→ Ectane Setup
b. Click Yes or No depending if you want to save or not the current Setup
Note: It is also possible to realise the same step by clicking in the menu bar on:
Setting→ Setup Wizard→ Create New Setup
d. Click on Tube from ID
e. Put the name of the Unit and Model of the Heat Exchanger or component
you are going to inspected with this setup
f. Select the Material, Wall thickness, Outside diameter and the Length of the
tube to be inspected. When finish press
Note: For the purpose of this procedure we put Mat: 316, WT: 1.65mm , OD: 19.05mm and
Length 10meter
g. Select the Technique: ECT, the Model: DefHi and Select the DefHi probe that
fit with the Part number on the Ectane connector. When selected it will
become blue then press
h. Nothing is required to do in that page. But Acquisition Rate and Typical
probe speed can be change. When finish press
m. To Create a Mix, first you need to press . Select the channel you
want to use for your mix. The name of the channel and the name of the
reference signal used to build your mix can be change. When finish press
n. This is where you set your filter for the C-scan. When finish press
Note: You can always come back to the window by clicking on to change and optimize your
filters. It is accessible to all the other setup wizard window.
o. This is where you set your filter for the bobbin channel. When finish press

p. All the calibration points that you have on your calibration tube should be in
that list. If not you can add the missing calibration points. When finish press
r. This window is to set Amplitude and Phase of the reference of each bobbin
channels. Voltage, References and Angle can be change to what your
procedure required. When finish press
s. Define witch channel you want to do a sizing. When finish press
Note: It’s possible to have multiples sizing curves with the same source. In that case add an ID
number in the left column and set a meaningful name for the sizing curve.
t. Select which indications you want to use to build you sizing . EX: In this case
for the F1A we selected only the Axial Crack indications and the hole. When
finish press
Note For Absolute channel make sure to used mesuarement method: PPF (peak to peak first
transition). The shape should be selected following those rules:
• Minimum of 1 indications on the ID or OD side plus the Hole = Best Fit Linear
• Minimum of 2 indications on the ID or OD side plus the Hole = Best Fit Polynomial
• Minimum of 1 indications on the ID and Minimum of 1 indications on the OD plus the
Hole = Best fit dual Linear
• Minimum of 1 indications on the ID and Minimum of 2 indications on the OD plus the
Hole ( it can also be 2ID and 1od plus the hole) = Best fit dual Slope
• Connect the points will only connect each calibration point to each other it will not try
to generate a curve or a line.
u. Select which indications you want to use to build you sizing . EX: In this case
for the F1C we selected only the Circumferential Crack indications and the
hole. When finish press
v. Select which indications you want to use to build you sizing . EX: In this case
for the F2A we selected only the Axial Crack indications and the hole. When
finish press
w. Select which indications you want to use to build you sizing . EX: In this case
for the F2C we selected only the Circumferential Crack indications and the
hole. When finish press
x. Select which indications you want to usd to build you sizing . EX: In this case
for the F1ABS we selected only the groove indications and the hole. When
finish press
y. Select which indications you want to use to build you sizing. EX: In this case
for the F1DIF we selected only the FBH indications and the hole. . When finish
press
z. Select which indications you want to usd to build you sizing . EX: In this case
for the F2ABS we selected only the groove indications and the hole. When
finish press .
aa. Select which indications you want to use to build you sizing. EX: In this case
for the F2DIF we selected only the FBH indications and the hole. . When finish
press
bb. Select which indications you want to use to build you sizing. EX: In this case
for the MIX1 selected only the FBH indications and the hole. When finish press
cc. If necessary you can add or delete indications base of what you are usually
using. When finish press
dd. Select which direction you want your strip chart to scroll up or down, if the
used of miniature strip chart is wanted, define the strip chart duration to
approximately 30 second and define de directions of the C-scan. When finish
press
ee. Select which layout you want to be generate by using the check box. The
default layout will be the one you will have selected in blue. When finish press
3. Calibration bobbin Channel
a. Change the strip chart to look at the Vertical component of your signal by
clicking on and choose which channel you want to look at in your strip
chart and lissajou window by click on .
d. Put the Bobbin Eddy Current probe in the calibration tube at a position
where you don’t have any indication that can disturbed the eddy current and
Press Balance or F6
e. Push the Bobbin probe out of calibration tube until the probe come out by
the other end of the tube. Then click on or F2 and pull your
calibration tube. When Finish click on or F2.
f. Zoom at the Area of interest, this is achieved by right clicking and hold in
the strip chart, then dragging the mouse down or up and releasing when the
selection is made.
i. Move the cursor and expend the outside to have the full support plate signal
in your lissajous window. Then press on the selection button and press
on .
i. Look at the residual signal from the support plate, the signal should be
around 0.4Vpp. Then move to the hole signal and make sure all the
channels give you 1Vpp and 40˚.
b. Select Sizing Curves and make sure the selection of the hole is done
properly and press on the selection button .
c. Move the cursor to ID groove 10% signal, the scale of the lissajous will need
to be change to see the whole signal. Make you are selecting the ID groove
properly and press on the selection button .
d. Move the cursor to FBH 80% signal, the scale of the lissajous will need to be
change to see the signal. Make you are selecting the FBH is done properly
and press on the selection button .
e. Move the cursor to FBH 60% signal, the scale of the lissajous will need to be
change to see the signal. Make you are selecting the FBH is done properly
and press on the selection button .
f. Move the cursor to FBH 40% signal, the scale of the lissajous will need to be
change to see the signal. Make you are selecting the FBH is done properly
and press on the selection button .
g. Move the cursor to 4x 20% FBH signal, the scale of the lissajous will need to
be change to see the signal. Make you are selecting the FBH is done
properly and press on the selection button .
h. Move the cursor to OD groove 20% signal, the scale of the lissajous will
need to be change to see the whole signal. Make you are selecting the ID
groove properly, press on the selection button and .
i. An error message will appear to tell you that the C-Scan sizing curve fail.
Ignore that error and close the window
j. Move the cursor to different indication that the sizing curve is working
properly.
b. Double click on the color palette ruler on top of the C-scan and change the
From: to -1.00 Volts and the To: to 1.00 Volts and press to and
click .
c. Right click on the C-scan cursor and press on move the cursor
on the indications and change the scale in your lissajous windows to see the
indications.
d. Move the C-Scan cursor to be on the Hole Signal and adjust the inner cursor
to see only the hole signal in the lissajous. In the lissajous click on to
have reading and press on the calibration button .
e. Select on C-scan click on the selection button and .
f. Select C-scan and Sizing Curve, click on HOLE and the selection button .
g. Move the cursor to OD 60% circumferential EDM notch in your calibration.
Channel the scale of your F2C channel to see the whole indication. Click on
OD-CIR-CRACK-60 and press the selection button .
j. Move the cursor to OD 60% Axial EDM notch in your calibration. Channel the
scale of your F2A channel to see the whole indication. Click on OD-AX-
CRACK-60 and press the selection button .
k. Move the cursor to OD 40% Axial EDM notch in your calibration. Channel the
scale of your F2A channel to see the whole indication. Click on OD-AX-
CRACK-40 and press the selection button .
l. Move the cursor to ID 40% Axial EDM notch in your calibration. Channel the
scale of your F2A channel to see the whole indication. Click on ID-AX-
CRACK-40 and press the selection button and .
m. Move the cursor to different indication that the sizing curve is working
properly.
b. Move the cursor in your Strip chart to select the hole in your lissajous and
click on and press and click .
c. Click on the data processing icon and check the 2 Median High Pass
filter press .
d. Press again.
e. Press again.
f. Press again.
Note: Now when you re pull your tube you should have a cleaner C-scan and the
indications in your C-scan and Strip Chart will match in position.
g. When finish press File→ Save Setup
