PHILIPPINES A CENTURY HENCE BY JOSE RIZAL

 Originally entitled “Filipinas dentro de Cien Años”


 First published in La Solidaridad in Madrid at September 30,1889 – February 1,1890
 Translated in English by Charles E Derbyshire
 An essay wrote by Jose Rizal pertaining of what will happen to the Philippines a hundred years.
 The essay was composed of 4 parts.

PART ONE CONTAINS:

— Analysis of the past


— Causes of the suffering on the natives;
1. Implementation of Spain military policies
2. Gradual loss and decay of indegenous culture and tradition
3. Innate sensitivity and submissive of the Filipinos
— Realization of the oppression of the colonizers.

“ In order to read the destiny of a people, it is necessary to open the book of it’s past and this, for the
Philippines may be reduced in general term to what follows.”

EFFECT OF THE SPANISH COLONIZATION

 Poverty became rampant


 Population decreased and the aspects of the life of the Filipino were restarted.
 The Filipinos lost their indigenous traditions and culture.
 The Filipino spirit was broken.

PART TWO

— Comparison of the past and present condition of the Philippines


1. Maintenance of Spanish authorities
2. Role of priests
— Emergence of an enlightened class
— Prevention of the progress of the Philippines
1. Brutalization of the masses through a caste addicted to the government
2. Impoverished of the country
3. Gradual extermination of the inhabitants.

What will become of the Philippines within a century? Will they continue to be Spanish colony?

A. For those who have a strong spirit over the liberty of the country, INDEPENDENCE was assured.
B. But for those who are discouraged and disillusioned by sad experiences shall be a PRISON of the
colony forever.

Now then, are the Philippines in the same condition they were three centuries ago?

A. For the Liberal Spaniards the ethical condition of the people remains the same.
B. For the friars and their followers they have progressed
C. For many Filipino ethics they have retrograded

Spaniards were able to take holds of the Philippines for three centuries because Filipinos remained
faithful, giving up their liberty and their independence, in exchange of all the promises given to them.
Filipinos sees the Spaniards as protectors but soon realize that they are its exploiters and executors.

If this state of affairs should continue, what will become of the Philippines within a century?

— People start to awaken and if the government doesn’t change its act, a revolution will
occur.

What do the people like?

— A Filipino representative in the Cortes and an authorized voice to cry out against all
kinds of abuses.
— To practice their human right.

POSSIBLE OUTCOMES:

1. THE PHILIPPINES WILL REMAIN UNDER SPANISH DOMINATION, BUT WITH MORE LAW
AND GREATER LIBERTY.
2. THEY WILL DECLARE THEMSELVES INDEPENDENT.

— Transformation on a political sense

 Filipino representative
— Critisisms

The importance of free press was emphasize in this part. Free press is needed in order to voice out their
complaints and suggestions toward the reformation of the country. It will keep the government in touch
with public opinion. The injustice reasons of the Spanish government were also tackled on why they
wouldn’t risk putting a Filipino representative in the Spanish Cortes.
