Assignment 3

1) The document contains 4 problems involving calculating moments of inertia for different shaped areas. 2) Problem 2 asks to determine the moments of inertia Ix and Iy of an area shown in Figure 2 with respect to centroidal axes parallel and perpendicular to side AB. 3) The solution locates the centroid C of the area, then calculates Ix and Iy by dividing the area into two parts and using formulas for the moment of inertia of each part.

Mechanics (2) Assignment (3)

1. Determine the moment of inertia of the cross-sectional area with

respect to the y axis.

Fig. (1)
2. Determine the moments of inertia Ix and Iy of the area shown with
respect to centroidal axes respectively parallel and perpendicular to
side AB.

3. Determine by direct integration the moment of inertia of the

shaded area with respect to the y axis.

4. Determine by direct integration the moment of inertia of the
shaded area with respect to the x axis.

Fig. (4)
Determine the moments of inertia I x and I y of the area shown with respect to
centroidal axes respectively parallel and perpendicular to side AB.

SOLUTION
First locate C of the area.
Symmetry implies X = 18 mm.

A, mm 2 y , mm yA, mm3

1 36 × 28 = 1008 14 14,112

1 31,752
2 × 36 × 42 = 756 42
2 Dimensions in mm

Σ 1764 45,864

Then Y Σ A = Σ yA : Y (1764 mm 2 ) = 45,864 mm3

or Y = 26.0 mm

Now I x = ( I x )1 + ( I x ) 2

1
where ( I x )1 = (36 mm)(28 mm)3 + (1008 mm 2 )[(26 − 14) mm]2
12
= (65,856 + 145,152) mm 4 = 211.008 × 103 mm 4
1
( I x )2 = (36 mm)(42 mm)3 + (756 mm 2 )[(42 − 26) mm]2
36
= (74,088 + 193,536) mm 4 = 267.624 × 103 mm 4

Then I x = (211.008 + 267.624) × 103 mm 4

or I x = 479 × 103 mm 4 

Also I y = ( I y )1 + ( I y ) 2

where ( I y )1 = (28 mm)(36 mm)3 = 108.864 × 103 mm 4

= 2(6804 + 13, 608) mm 4 = 40.824 × 103 mm 4

[( I y )2 is obtained by dividing A2 into ]

Then I y = (108.864 + 40.824 × 103 mm 4 or I y = 149.7 × 103 mm 4 

Determine by direct integration the moment of inertia of the shaded area with
