HISTORICAL EVENT: Marcos’ Declaration of Martial Law

PRIMARY SOURCES:
1. Speech delivered by President Ferdinand E. Marcos proclaiming the termination of the
state of martial law, January 17, 1981 : proclamation no. 2045, proclamation no. 1081,
and proclamation no. 1104
2. The New York Times reported about these events in an article titled “Mass Arrests and
Curfew Announced in Philippines; Mass Arrests Ordered in Philippines” in their
September 24, 1972 issue. The Daily Express itself announced in its September 24 issue
that Marcos had proclaimed martial law the day before, September 23, 1972.
3. In his own diary, Marcos wrote on September 14, 1972 that he informed the military that
he would proceed with proclaiming Martial Law. Even the U.S. Embassy in Manila knew
as early as September 17, 1972 about Marcos’ plan.

BIASES:
 The goal of the Martial law was to eliminate rebellion and to nimble the national
development. But suddenly, its effect was not good at all as massive crime, iniquities,
cruelty, inhumane treatment and fear to the hearts of the Filipino people appear.
After that event, graft and corruption still exist until now. Filipinos don’t have the
freedom to speak.
