This document presents the design calculations for an abutment and pile foundation for a bridge. It includes calculations for live loads, dead loads of the superstructure, loads on the abutment and pile cap, design of the pile, pile capacity, design of the pile cap, abutment, return wall, and seismic coefficients. Live load reactions were calculated to be 90.15 tons for a single lane and 88.94 tons for two lanes. Dead weight of the superstructure was calculated to be 312.07 tons. Design of the abutment, pile, pile cap, and return wall are presented to support these loads.

01. Introduction

This note presents the detail design calculations for Abutment and its Pile foundation. A
typical design for Abutment with Elastomeric bearings is been presented here. The analysis
& design consist of design of Abutment, design of Pile foundation & design of return wall

This design is applicable for following Abutments

Pile Cap
Abutment FRL GL Bottom DIFF
Level
(M) (M) (M) (M)
A1 23.474 15.409 13.109 10.37
A2 23.474 15.409 13.109 10.37

As can be seen from above Abutment A1 & A2 has same level difference
Since the design is applicable for group of Abutment

Title: Design Calculation of Pile Capacity (B1)
Rev 0
For Clay
Layers
Q ult = Qe + Qf
Qe = Ap x Nc x Cp
Qf = a x c x As
Calculation of end bearing component
Ap = 1.13 Sqm
Cp = 0.00 T /Sqm
Nc = 9 (As per IS:2911-part 1 /section 2 -1979)
Qe = 0.00 T
Qf = 332.51 Tons

Ultimate Bearing Capacity:

Q ult = Qe + Qf
Q ult = 0.00 + 332.51
Q ult = 332.51 T
FOS = 2.50 (As per IS:2911-part 1 /section 2 -1979)
Q safe = 332.51 / 2.5
Q safe = 133 T

For combination of Sand & Clay layers

Qe = 0.00 T
Qf = 689.35 T
Q ult = 689.35 T
Q safe = 276 T
