The old Egyptians did not write in letters and words like we do today. They used symbols
called hieroglyphics. For 1500 years these strange symbols were a mystery and nobody
could understand them. Then in 1799 something happened. While some archaeologists were
working in Rosetta near the river Nile, they found a very old black stone. The important thing
about this stone, the Rosetta Stone, was that it had inscriptions in hieroglyphics with the
Greek translation under the hieroglyphics. Jean-François Champollion was born in France in
1790. He was a very clever child and, when he was sixteen, he could speak six languages
perfectly. Greek was one of these languages. Jean-François studied the writing on the
Rosetta Stone for many hours every day. Little by little he began to understand the mystery
of the hieroglyphics. In 1824 he solved the mystery and translated almost all the symbols.
Because of the Rosetta Stone and the intelligence of Jean-François Champollion we can
now understand the secrets and mysteries of old Egyptian civilization.
