HMP Shunt

Hexo Monophosphate Shunt

Hexo Monophosphate Shunt

- Also called Pentose phosphate shunt or

Phosphogluconate pathway

- An alternative oxidative path for glucose

- More active in adipose tissue than in muscle
- ATP is not generated
2 main purpose
● Formation of NADPH
● Production of Ribose-5-P
NADPH
- Reduced form of Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide
Phosphate (NADP+) - a coenzyme needed for the
synthesis of fatty acids and steroids.
Ribose-5-P
- 5 carbon sugar
- Needed for synthesis of nucleotides and nucleic acid
Glucose-6-phosphate 6-phosphogluconolactone 6-phosphogluconate ribulose 5-phosphate
The overall reaction for this process is:

Glucose 6-phosphate + 2 NADP+ + H2O → ribulose 5-phosphate + 2 NADPH + 2 H+ + CO2

6-phosphate dehydrogenase
- is a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the chemical reaction

D-glucose 6-phosphate + NADP+ ⇌ 6-phospho-D-glucono-1,5-lactone + NADPH + H+

6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency
Effects:

- Hemolytic Anemia
- Resistance to Malaria
- Reduces NADPH levels in red blood cells
