AIM

In this lesson you will learn:

How to use a Paint Application

LESSON OUTCOME

After you have studied this lesson, you will be able to:

Identify the canvas area, Tool bars

Open, draw and save Paint files

Tux Paint (in edubuntu) is an easy to use application that is used to

draw and paint pictures. You can even insert text matter in these

pictures. The icon for the Tux Paint application is shown below.

1
You can start the application by bringing the pointer of the mouse on

top of the icon. Now click the left mouse button once to select the

icon, now press the Enter key. The application starts. The following

figure shows open application window.

(add colour pallete)

Just as in your drawing books you have blank pages, this application

also has a blank space where you can draw and paint pictures. This

is called the Canvas. Tool bars are also provided on both sides of the

canvas area to assist you in drawing and painting.

2
Taking a closer look at the tool bars

On the left hand side tool bar some tool options are available. Once

an option is selected, the sub options available for that particular tool

are displayed on the right hand side tool bar. The following figure

shows one such tool bar; when the 'Magic' option is selected from

the left hand side tool bar, the options available under it is available

on the right hand side tool bar. When the 'Paint' option is selected

from the left hand side tool bar, from the right hand side tool bar you

3
can select different thickness for the brushes. Another interesting tool

is the 'Stamp' tool. It gives a list of preloaded images which you can

insert into the picture drawn.

The eraser tool can be used to erase the data or contents written on

the canvas. Even the eraser thickness can be changed!

Once you have drawn the picture you can save it using the 'Save'

option from the left hand side tool bar. A dialog box pops up asking

how you want to save the file.

4
If the ‘Yes’ option is selected then the old file will be overwritten by the

new version, in case of ‘No’ the file is saved as a new file. The old file

will also be available.

If you wish to exit the application, select ‘Quit’ option from the ‘Tools’

tool bar. If the file you are working is not yet saved a dialog box pops

5
up warning us that the file is not saved and the picture will be lost.

How to open and edit a file?

6
To open a file in the Tux Paint application, select the ‘Open ‘ option

from the ‘Tools’ tool bar, this will open another screen that gives the

list of available Tux Paint application files. Select the file that is to be

open. You can open a particular picture to open it and start colour it!

For the Teacher

1 Ask questions how they will draw pictures using a computer. Get their
ideas. PAINT applications may also pop up as an answer!

2 Now just show them the Tux Paint icon. The icon itself can catch the
attention of the kids.

3 Double click the icon and open the Tux Paint application.

4 Show them the toolbars and the canvas area. Explain that the canvas area
is just like the paper we use to draw. Tell them about tool bar and the
options displayed on the right hand side. Show them eraser magic and
stamps tools.

5 Now just scribble something and erase it. Draw some lines changing the
thickness of the lines. Erase it.

6 Do it over and over some 2-3 times, so that they get familiarized with the
icons on the toolbar.

7 Draw a picture according to what the kids want you to do and save the
picture drawn. You may write their names using rainbow and have some
sparkles around it!

8 This lesson requires kids to have hands-on practice the skills. So allow
them to practice!
