Caselet: Mr. Padua
1. Describe the personality of Mr. Padua. How is this reflected in his communication style?
I think he is passive and aloof for he has difficulty interacting with others at the same time he
doesn’t want others to invade his personal space. And the thing is, he is well aware of this
personality and so, oftentimes, tries his best to somehow converse with the people around him.
It’s just that he is not comfortable being with people. And so, another characteristic to describe
him is that he is simply not the “people’s person” type. Because of this, he is, more often than
not, misunderstood as insensitive, difficult to please, and unapproachable. Also, he is
authoritarian and values only his thoughts and opinions and those who differ from him will be
treated with a degree of coldness (as stated). And this leadership style of his drove people at a
distance from him.
2. How has this style affected his relationship with his associates and subordinates?
Filipinos value pakikisama. We have so much need to belong to a group, to have a smooth
interpersonal relationship with our bosses and work colleagues, to be in agreement with their
likes and dislike so as not to create friction, and to sugar-coat the truth so as not to hurt other
people’s feelings. In the case of Mr. Padua, he’d rather stand for his ‘own truth’ even if he won’t
gain supporters and he doesn’t feel the need to explain himself. He tends to withdraw and, thus,
misunderstood and disliked to the point of wanting him replaced. This affected his relationship
with his colleagues negatively because there’s no open communication among them. Mr. Padua
finds it difficult to bond with them at the same time, people around him finds it difficult to air
their concerns because of fear.
3. If you were the management, would you have him replaced? Defend your stand.
No. His expertise is valuable to the company. The problem of miscommunication and
misunderstanding can be settled by an open forum wherein each employee can air their
sentiments towards Mr. Padua in a respectful manner and vice versa.
4. What implication does the case have on management policies and practices on hiring and
developing workers and staff?
There are companies that do not give premium on social skills as long as the applicants have a
wide background or experiences related to the applied position. When hiring, usually the list of
qualifications does not include social skills, only communication skills. But I believe that social
skills and communication skills are two related but very different things. One can communicate
fluently both in writing and speaking the language but lacks the skills to interact with other
people because they’re introverts, shy, afraid, or simply arrogant to mingle with the subordinates.
Management should take into consideration the social skills of the employees. But it’s difficult to
determine when hiring prospective employees. So, to cultivate socially yet responsible people,
management should provide team building every once in a while. It will give them the chance to
bond with others, to create connections, to establish friendships, to share ideas and collaborate,
and to work as a team for achievement of the company’s mission and vision.
