What is SWOT analysis? What are the major elements of SWOT analysis?

SWOT Analysis is a strategic methodology to analyze the - Strengths & Weaknesses that
Varun Beverages possess, and Opportunities & Threats that the firm faces because of
competitive and macro-economic factors.

SWOT analysis provides key insights into both internal and external factors that can impact
the performance of an organization. It can help the strategy makers of the organization to
optimize performance, look for new opportunities, manage competition, maximize return
on resources employed, and minimization of various business and policy making risks.

What should be included in a SWOT analysis of Varun Beverages?

There are four major elements / components of SWOT analysis - Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities, and Threats. Varun Beverages can divide these four elements into two broad
categories - Internal Factors and External Factors.

SWOT Analysis of Varun Beverages

STRENGTHS OF VARUN BEVERAGES

WHAT ARE "STRENGTHS" IN SWOT ANALYSIS?

Strengths are the firm's capabilities and resources that it can use to design, develop, and
sustain competitive advantage in the marketplace

- Talent management at Varun Beverages and skill development of the employees - Human
resources are integral to the success of Varun Beverages in Beverages (Nonalcoholic)
industry.

- Diverse Revenue models - Over the years Varun Beverages has ventured into various
businesses outside the Consumer/Non-Cyclical sector. This has enabled the company do
develop a diversified revenue stream beyond Consumer/Non-Cyclical sector and Beverages
(Nonalcoholic) segment.

28
29

- High margins compare to Beverages (Nonalcoholic) industry's competitors - Even though

Varun Beverages is facing downward pressure on profitability, compare to competitors it is
still racking in higher profit margins.

- Wide geographic presence - Varun Beverages has extensive dealer network and associates
network that not only help in delivering efficient services to the customers but also help in
managing competitive challenges in Beverages (Nonalcoholic) industry.

- Market Leadership Position - Varun Beverages has a strong market leadership position in
the Beverages (Nonalcoholic) industry. It has helped the company to rapidly scale new
products successes.

- Track record of innovation - Even though most players in the Consumer/Non-Cyclical strive
to innovate, Varun Beverages has successful record at consumer driven innovation.

WEAKNESSES OF VARUN BEVERAGES

WHAT ARE "WEAKNESSES" IN SWOT ANALYSIS?

Weaknesses of Varun Beverages can either be absence of strengths or resources of

capabilities that are required but at present the organization doesn't have. Managers have
to be certain if the weakness is present because of lack of strategic planning or as a result of
strategic choice.

- High cost of replacing existing experts within the Varun Beverages. Few employees are
responsible for the Varun Beverages's knowledge base and replacing them will be extremely
difficult in the present conditions.

- Loyalty among suppliers is low - Given the history of Varun Beverages coming up with new
innovations to drive down prices in the supply chain.

- Niche markets and local monopolies that company’s like Varun Beverages able to exploit
are fast disappearing. The customer network that Varun Beverages has promoted is proving
less and less effective.

- Declining market share of Varun Beverages with increasing revenues - the Beverages
(Nonalcoholic) industry is growing faster than the company. In such a scenario Varun
Beverages has to carefully analyze the various trends within the Consumer/Non-Cyclical
sector and figure out what it needs to do to drive future growth.

29
30

- Extra cost of building new supply chain and logistics network - Internet and Artificial
Intelligence has significantly altered the business model in the Consumer/Non-Cyclical
industry and given the decreasing significance of the dealer network Varun Beverages has to
build a new robust supply chain network. That can be extremely expensive.

- Declining per unit revenue for Varun Beverages - competitiveness in the industryname
industry is putting downward pressure on the profitability. A starting guide to manage this
situation for companyname is – objectively assessing the present value propositions of the
various products.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR VARUN BEVERAGES

WHAT ARE "OPPORTUNITIES" IN SWOT ANALYSIS?

Opportunities are potential areas where the firm chan identify potential for - growth,
profits, and market share.

- Lower inflation rate - The low inflation rate bring more stability in the market, enable
credit at lower interest rate to the customers of Varun Beverages. This will increase the
consumption of Varun Beverages products.

- Opportunities in Online Space - Increasing adoption of online services by customers will

also enable Varun Beverages to provide new offerings to the customers in Beverages
(Nonalcoholic) industry.

- Customer preferences are fast changing - Driven by rising disposable incomes, easy access
to information, and fast adoption of technological products, customers today are more
willing to experiment / try new products in the market. Varun Beverages has to carefully
monitor not only wider trends within the Beverages (Nonalcoholic) industry but also in the
wider Consumer/Non-Cyclical sector.

- Local Collaboration - Tie-up with local players can also provide opportunities of growth for
the Varun Beverages in international markets. The local players have local expertise while
Varun Beverages can bring global processes and execution expertise on table.

- Rapid Expansion of Economy As the US economy is improving faster than any other
developed economy, it will provide Varun Beverages an opportunity to expand into the US
market. Varun Beverages already have know-how to operate into the competitive US
market.

- Lowering of the cost of new product launches through third party retail partners and
dedicated social network. Varun Beverages can use the emerging trend to start small before
scaling up after initial success of a new product.

30
31

THEATS TO VARUN BEVERAGES

WHAT ARE "THREATS" IN SWOT ANALYSIS?

Threats are factors that can be potential dangers to the firm's business models because of
changes in macro economic factors and changing consumer perceptions. Threats can be
managed but not controlled.

- Shortage of skilled human resources - Given the high turnover of employees and increasing
dependence on innovative solution, companyname can face skilled human resources
challenges in the near future.

- Growing technological expertise of local players in the export market - One of the biggest
threat of tie-up with the local players in the export market for Varun Beverages is threat of
losing IPR. The intellectual property rights framework is not very strong in emerging markets
especially in China.

- Competitive pressures - As the new product launch cycles are reducing in the
Consumer/Non-Cyclical industry. It has put additional competitive pressures on players such
as Varun Beverages. Given the large customer base, Varun Beverages can't respond quickly
to the needs of the niche markets that disruptors are focusing on.

- Competitors catching up with the product development - Even though at present the
Varun Beverages is still leader in product innovation in the Beverages (Nonalcoholic)
segment. It is facing stiff challenges from international and local competitors.

- Commoditization of the product segment - The biggest challenge for Varun Beverages and
other players in the industry is the increasing commoditization of the products in
Consumer/Non-Cyclical industry.

- Trade Relation between US and China can affect Varun Beverages growth plans - This can
lead to full scale trade war which can hamper the potential of Varun Beverages to expand
operations in China.

Methodology

The research methodology I used for this project is simple and easy in comprehending. I
have used two methods for collecting the desired information regarding PepsiCo Human
Resource Management and Performance appraisal which were primary and Secondary data
collection method. I have conducted a field study by visiting the HRM department of Varun
Beverages. I have interviewed the Head of the HR department Ms. Jyoti Verma. and got the
following information.

The data source:

Primary as well as Secondary.

The research approach:

Survey Method.

The research instrument:

Questionnaire.

The respondents:

The Managers & Employees of Varun Beverages. The primary data was collected with the
help of survey information. A concise questionnaire was prepared keeping in mind the
information specifications

Type of Research

A Research design specifies the methods and procedures for conducting a particular study.
It is a map (or) blue print to which the research is to be conducted. The research design will
give a clear cut idea of the procedure to be followed for the completion of the project. The
research has been carried out with certain focused objectives which need to be fulfilled
after the completion of the study. The completion of these objectives will throw some light
on the problem.

EXPLORATORY research

design has been considered as a suitable methodology for present study and for data
analysis.

Sample size and method of selecting sample:

Sampling refers to the method of selecting a sample from a given universe with a view to
draw conclusion about that universe. A sample is a representative of the universe selected
for study. Convenience sampling is used in exploratory research where the researcher is

33
34

interested in getting an inexpensive approximation of the truth. As the name implies, the
sample is selected because they are convenient.

This non probability method is often used during preliminary research efforts to get a gross
estimate of the results, without incurring the cost or time required to select a random
sample.

There are two types of sampling:

Random Sampling

Random Sampling is a process of selecting the sample size randomly and no choice or
preference to be made about the selection of respondents for the market survey and
Questionnaire to be put forth against him.

Systematic Sampling

It is a sampling where the limited number of selected respondents is figure out based on
some criteria so that only those respondents can be asked for the purpose of filling
questionnaire.

Sample size:

The sample size for the survey conducted was 50 respondents. All were employees of VBL
PepsiCo.

Random sampling Technique was used in the survey conducted.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research design is the overall description of all the steps though which the projects have
preceded from the setting of objectives to the writing of the project report. The success of
the project depends on the soundness of the research design, which includes problem
definition, specific method of data collection and analysis and time required for the project.

Suggestions

This is one of the most important and most difficult parts of the study. I arrived
at certain recommendations for varun beverage. Some of the important
recommendations are as follows:

 Company should adopt aggressive marketing strategy that it could reach each
and every place

 Company should have better logistic facility for making reach the product at
retailers door at a right time

 Marketing development coordinators/ marketing executives / sales executives of

the company must focus more for making better relationship with retailers

 Company should provide visi cooler to every retailer. Because who is having visi
cooler of which company they are promoting the same brand to the consumer

 Company should mere focus on youth of the country because youths more prefer
the soft drink
