Design of Slab: S1 (Two-Way Slab) : Mu, Lim 0.138 FCK B d2 D (13.94 X

This document summarizes the design of a two-way reinforced concrete slab. The slab is 6m x 3.5m with discontinuous edges. It is 150mm thick with a 130mm effective depth. Design loads include self-weight, dead, and live loads totaling 13.875 kN/m^2. Moment coefficients were calculated based on span ratios. Reinforcement amounts and spacing were then designed to resist the ultimate bending moments in both directions.

Design of slab: S1 (Two-way slab)

Size of slab = 6 m x 3.5 m

Edge conditions = Adjacent edges discontinuous
Materials used = M-30 grade of concrete
and Fe-500 HYSD bars Depth of slab =
150 mm
Effective depth (dx) = 130 mm

Loads:
Self-weight of slab = (25 x 0.13) = 3.25 kN/m2

Dead Load = 2 kN/m2

Live Load =4 kN/m2
Therefore design ultimate load = wu = (1.5 x 9.25) = 13.875 kN/m2

Ultimate design moments

The moment coefficients for

(Ly/Lx) =6/3.5 =1.7
Short span moment
coefficients:
–ve moment coefficient = αx = 0.047
+ve moment
coefficient = αx = 0.035 Long
span moment coefficients:
–ve moment coefficient = αy = 0.082
+ve moment coefficient= αy = 0.061

Mux (-ve) = x(αx wu L 2) = (0.082 x 13.875 x

3.52 ) = 13.94
x kN-m
Mux (+ve) =x(αx wu L 2) = (0.061 x 13.875 x
3.52) = 10.36x kN-m
Muy (-ve) = (αy wu L 2) = (0.047x 13.875 x
3.52 ) = 8 kN-m
Muy (+ve) = (αy wu L 2) = (0.035 x 13.875 x
3.52 ) = 5.94 kN-m

Check for depth:

Mu,lim = 0.138 fck b d2

D= √ (13.94 x
106)/ (0.138 x 30
x 1000) = 60
mm < 130 mm

Hence the effective depth selected is sufficient to resist the design ultimate moment

Ast (for x-)= 0.5 * (fck/fy) * (1-(1- (4.6* Mu/(f ck*b*d2)0.5))*b*d) = 321.8 mm2/m

Distribution bars : Ast , min = 156 mm2

Ast (for y-)= 0.5 * (fck/fy) * (1-(1- (4.6* Mu/(f ck*b*d2)0.5))*b*d) = 180.4 mm2/m

Provide 10 mm dia bars @ 300 mm c/c
