Set Tutorial

This document contains instructions for 6 tutorials involving modeling dynamic systems and control loops: 1. Develop a dynamic model for variable holdup in stirred tank heating processes. 2. Solve models for two liquid surge tanks in series with different properties and valve resistances. 3. Given a transfer function subject to a unit step input, solve for steady state gain, damping coefficient, overshoot, decay ratio, time to first peak, and oscillation period. 4. Solve for steady state gain relating reactor temperature to feed flow rate, given temperature changes from an input change. 5. SET TUTORIAL

1. Develop the dynamic model for stirred tanks heating process for variable hold up
2. SOLVE:

3. Two liquid surge tanks (Tank 1 and Tank 2) are placed in series so that the outflow
from the first tank is the inflow to the second tank. These two tanks have different cross
sectional areas denoted as A1 and A2 and the valve resistance are fixed at R1 and R2.
The outlet flow rate from each tank is linearly related to the height of the liquid in the
tank. Illustrate the schematic diagram for this system and develop the dynamic model
for both tank (Tank 1 and Tank 2). Derive the transfer function of H’1(s) /Q’i(s), Q’1(s)/
H’1(s), H’2(s)/Q’1(s) and Q’2(s)/H’2(s).

4. Consider the following transfer function, subject to unit step (∆ u=1) input change
(assume time in minutes). G (s) = 25
5s2 +10s+8

i) Solve steady state gain, K, and damping coefficient, ζ

ii) Calculate overshoot, decay ratio, time to first peak and period of oscillation.
5. A proportional controller is used to regulate coolant flow rate to keep the reactor
temperature become constant. The controller exhibits underdamped second order
temperature response characteristic when disturbance is applied. Solve steady state
gain, K, that relates changes in reactor temperature to changes in feed flow rate, when
feed flow rate to the reactor changes suddenly from 0.4 to 0.5 kg/s and the
temperature of reactor, initially at 100 ̊ C, changes eventually to 102 ̊C.

6. An engineer was designed a temperature control loop and desired the loop to have a
1/6 decay ratio and the process gain is 1. To test the loop, operators were provided a
disturbance to the system instantaneously changing flow stream and be observed that
the period of oscillation was 10 minutes. Determine second order transfer function for
the process and the time that maximum temperature occurred.
