Isolater

Isolators are manually operated switches that are used to isolate portions of an electrical circuit from each other under no load conditions. They allow repair or replacement of circuit breakers without danger by being installed on both ends of the breaker. There are three main types: double break, single break, and pantograph. Double break isolators use three insulators and a lever or motor to rotate a contact. Single break isolators separate the arm contact into two pieces. Pantograph isolators take up less space by including a post and operating insulator. Isolators are used in substations to isolate faulty sections and for signal isolation.

Isolators

Isolator is a manually operated mechanical switch which separates a part of the electrical power.
Isolators are used to open a circuit under no load.

Its main purpose is to isolate one portion of the circuit from the other and is not intended to be
opened while current is flowing in the line.

Isolators are generally used on both ends of the breaker in order that repair or replacement of
circuit breaker can be done without and danger.

Isolator Symbol is represented by the following image

Types of Electrical Isolators

The electrical isolators are classified based on the requirement of the system which includes the
following.

 Double Break Type Isolator

 Single Break Type Isolator
 Pantograph Type Isolator

Types of Electrical Isolators

Double Break Type Isolator
This type of isolator consists of three loads of post insulators. The middle insulator holds a flat
male or tubular contact that can be turned straightly by a spin of middle post insulator. The
rotation of the middle post insulator can be done by a lever method at the bottom of the post
insulator, as well as it is related to manual operation (operating handle) or motorized operation
motor (using motor) of the isolator via a mechanical knot rod.

Single Break Type Isolators

In this type of isolator, the arm contact is separated into two elements. The first arm contact
holds male contact, as well as second arm contact, holds female contact. The arm contact shifts
because of the post insulator rotation upon which the arm contacts are fixed.

Pantograph Type Isolator

The pantograph type isolator permits current switchgear installation, and it requires the least
space. This type of insulator includes a post insulator as well as an operating insulator.

According to the power system location, the isolator can be classified into three types namely
bus side, line side and transfer bus side isolator.
1. Bus side isolator: It directly connects to the main bus
2. Transfer bus side isolator: It directly connects to the transfer bus.
3. Line side isolator: It is generally located at line side of the feeder

Electrical Isolator Operation

The operation of electrical isolator can be done by the following two operational
methods namely opening and closing.

Opening Operation of Electrical Isolator

 In the beginning, open the major circuit breaker.
 Then divide the load from a system with isolator opening
 Close the earth switch. Earth switch can become with an interlock system with isolator.
That’s means when isolator is open only that time earth switch can be closed.
Closing Operation of Electrical Isolator
 Detach the earth switch.
 Shut the isolator.
 Shut the circuit breaker.

Applications of Isolator

The applications of isolator include the following.

 High Voltage Devices: Isolators are used in High Voltage devices.

 Isolator in Substation: When a fault occurs in a substation, then isolator cuts
out a portion of a substation.
 Signal Isolation: Isolators can be used for isolation of signal.
