Question: A 10-meter ladder leans against a wall of the building. If its bottom is 4 meters from the foot of the
building, how high is the top of the ladder from the ground?
Solution:
Illustrate the problem and identify the given
10 m = length of the ladder
4 m = distance of the foot of the
Ladder from the foot of the building
Solve for the height reached by the ladder
Use the Pythagorean theorem
Let c= 10m a= 4m
Solve for b
𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2
(10𝑚)2 = (4𝑚)2 + 𝑏 2
𝑏 2 = 100𝑚2 − 16𝑚2
𝑏 2 = 84𝑚2
√𝑏 2 = √84𝑚2
𝑏 = √4 ∗ 21 𝑚

Answer: 𝑏 = 2√21 𝑚

Question: Out of 7 consonants and 4 vowels, how many words of 3 consonants and 2 vowels can be formed?
a. 24,400 c. 210
b. 21,300 d. 25,200
Solution:
Number of ways of selecting 3 consonants from 7 = 7𝐶3
Number of ways of selecting 2 vowels from 4 = 4𝐶2
Number of ways of selecting 3 consonants from 7 and 2 vowels from 4 :
= 7𝐶3 × 4𝐶2
7 ×6 ×5 4 ×3
=3 ×2 ×1 × 2 ×1 = 210
There are 210 groups wherein each group contains 3 consonants and 2 vowels.
Number of ways of arranging 5 letters among themselves:
= 5!= 5× 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 120
= 210 × 120 = 25,200
Answer: Hence, the number of ways possible is 25, 200.

Question: Angles A and B are complementary and the measure of angle A is twice the measure of angle B.
Find the measures of angles A and B.
Solution:
Let A be the measure of angle A and B be the measure of angle B. Hence
A = 2B
Angles A and B are complementary; hence
A + B = 90°
But A = 2B; hence
2B + B = 90
3B = 90
B = 90 / 3 = 30°
A = 2B = 60°
Answer: A= 60°
B = 30°

Question: ABCD is a parallelogram such that AB is parallel to DC and DA parallel to CB. The length of side
AB is 20 cm. E is a point between A and B such that the length of AE is 3 cm. F is a point between points D and
C. Find the length of DF such that the segment EF divide the parallelogram in two regions with equal areas.
Solution:
Let A1 be the area of the trapezoid AEFD. Hence
A1 = (1/2) h (AE + DF) = (1/2) h (3 + DF) , h is the height of the parallelogram.
Now let A2 be the area of the trapezoid EBCF. Hence
A2 = (1/2) h (EB + FC)
We also have
EB = 20 - AE = 17 , FC = 20 - DF
We now substitute EB and FC in A2 = (1/2) h (EB + FC)
A2 = (1/2) h (17 + 20 - DF) = (1/2) h (37 - DF)
For EF to divide the parallelogram into two regions of equal ares, we need to have area A1 and area A2 equal
(1/2) h (3 + DF) = (1/2) h (37 - DF)
Multiply both sides by 2 and divide them by h to simplify to
3 + DF = 37 - DF
Solve for DF
2DF = 37 - 3
2DF = 34
Answer: DF = 17 cm
