Effective Useful Life

This document provides a list of effective useful lives in years for various energy efficiency measures from lighting and HVAC to building envelope and electrical systems. The lives range from 4 years for some lighting measures up to 25 years for solar photovoltaic panels with a 25-year performance warranty. The lives are mainly from the 2008 and 2011 Database for Energy Efficiency Resources and were selected as being most appropriate based on available data and information. Renewable and generation projects not covered by DEER will be considered case-by-case based on maintenance requirements and warranty periods.

Background: Effective Useful Life for Energy Measures in

Years
The EUL list for the energy efficiency measures is mainly determined from the 2008 and 2011 updates of
Database for Energy Efficiency Resources (DEER) for building related energy efficiency measures. The
general approach for selecting EULs for the 2008 and 2011 DEER updates was to review the various data
sources and the related underlying strengths and weaknesses and provide EUL recommendations that
were determined to be most appropriate, based on the information that was available.

There are insufficient data for renewable and other generation projects in the DEER database, and there
is not a consensus number for these projects. The Energy Commission will consider other renewable and
generation projects on a case-by-case basis based on available information, required maintenance, and
project warranty period.
