Fall Semester Weekend Intra-2019-20 Digital Assignment-2 Last Date of Submission: 01/11/2019

This document contains instructions for two digital assignments that are due on November 1st, 2019. The first assignment involves calculating the heat load and steam economy of a single effect evaporator concentrating a salt solution. The second assignment involves calculating the heat transfer rate and exit temperature of fluid B in a counterflow heat exchanger given inlet temperatures and flow rates of fluids A and B, and the heat exchanger's effectiveness.

FALL SEMESTER WEEKEND INTRA-2019-20

Digital assignment-2

Last date of submission: 01/11/2019

1. 15000 kg/h of a solution having a concentration of 7 % salt is to be concentrated to a

concentration of 13 % salt by weight by a single effect evaporator. Steam is fed to the
evaporator at a pressure corresponding to the saturation temperature of 399 K (126oC).
The evaporator is operating at atmospheric pressure and boiling point rise is 10 K.
Calculate the heat load and steam economy.

Given data: Feed temperature = 298 K (25oC)

Specific heat of feed = 4.0 kJ/kg K

Latent heat of condensation of steam at 399 K = 2185 kJ/kg

Latent heat of vaporization of water at 373 K = 2257 kJ/kg

2. A double pipe counter flow heat exchanger is used to exchange heat between two fluids
A and B. The inlet temperature of fluid A is 420oC and has a mass flow rate of 1 kg/s.
The inlet temperature of fluid B is 20oC and has flow rate of 1 kg/s. The effectiveness of
heat exchanger is 70%. Calculate (1) The heat transfer rate; (2) The exit temperature of
fluid B.
Specific heat of fluid A and B is 1 kJ/kg K and 4 KJ/kg K respectively.
