The Taguchi technique is a statistical approach that focuses on designing quality into products and processes through reducing process variability around a target value. It emphasizes customer satisfaction through robust parameter design. Six Sigma is a data-driven approach that improves quality by analyzing data with statistics to produce outputs with very few defects. It aims for a process capable of producing only 3.4 defects per million. Both Taguchi and Six Sigma can be applied to manufacturing and non-manufacturing businesses through careful management and a focus on customers, projects, training, and organizational change.

TAGUCHI TECHNIQUE:

1. Taguchi Method is a statistical approach to optimize the process parameters and improve the
quality of components that are manufactured.
2. A proactive approach based on measurement, analysis, prediction and prevention and it focused
primarily on, designing quality into products and processes rather than inspecting into them.
3. This method lays great emphasis on responsiveness towards customer’s satisfaction.
4. Taguchi accentuated the importance of reducing process variability around a specified target
value and then bringing the process mean on target. This method focusses on robust parameter
design.
5. The issue is identified by careful selection of design parameters called factors, resulting in a
more robust design that is capable of withstanding variations from unwanted sources.

SIX SIGMA:

1. Six Sigma is an approach that improves quality by analysing data with statistics. It refers to a
process in which the range between the mean of a process quality measurement and the
nearest specification limit is at least six times the standard deviation of the process.
2. Six Sigma has the ability to produce products and services with only 3.4 defects per million,
which is a world-class performance.
3. Six Sigma has also been described as a high-performance data driven approach in analysing the
root causes of business problems and solving them.
4. Six Sigma implementation can be divided into types of business: manufacturing and non-
manufacturing.
5. The effective introduction and implementation of Six sigma can be done in any business by 1)
Management commitment and involvement. 2) Understanding of Six Sigma methodology, tools,
and techniques. 3) Linking Six Sigma to business strategy. 4) Linking Six Sigma to customers. 5)
Project selection, reviews and tracking. 6) Organizational infrastructure. 7) Cultural change. 8)
Project management skills. 9) Liking Six Sigma to suppliers. 10) Training.
